There’s an old proverb that I remember hearing from my Dad … “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight … red sky at morning, sailor take warning.” Since the lighthouse image was taken in the morning … and the cloud image was taken at night … have I confused the universe???

This image is a compilation of two shots. The lighthouse was taken at York, Maine, on September 4, 2008 with the Nikon D40x and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens. Shutter 1/2000, aperture f5.6. The sky was shot in Montgomery County, Maryland with the Nikon D40x and the 18-135mm Nikon lens, shutter 1/80 aperture f/4.5. They were combined in Photoshop.

Nubble Lighthouse – Maine, USA

“The “Nubble” is a small, rocky island a short distance off the eastern point of Cape Neddick, about two miles north of the entrance to the York River and York Harbor. In 1602, explorer Bartholomew Gosnold met with local Indians on the island and dubbed it “Savage Rock.”

A view from Long Sands Beach in York
The placement of a lighthouse on the Nubble had been recommended by many local mariners since 1807. An 1837 proposal was rejected on the grounds that there were already enough lights in the vicinity. Even after the wreck of the bark Isidore in 1842, north of the Nubble near Bald Head Cliff, it still took nearly four more decades before the lighthouse was established. The Isidore, according to legend, still reappears as a ghost ship with a phantom crew.

Congress appropriated $15,000 for the building of a lighthouse on the Nubble in 1876. The 41-foot cast-iron tower, lined with brick, was first illuminated on July 1, 1879. At first, the lighthouse was painted reddish-brown, showing a fixed red light through a fourth order Fresnel lens.

The lighthouse still exhibits a red light, but the tower has been painted white since 1902.

The distinctive red oil house was built in 1902, and the walkway connecting the lighthouse to the keeper’s house was added in 1911.

The station originally had a fog bell operated by automatic striking machinery. The skeleton frame bell tower was replaced in 1911 by a white pyramidal tower, itself torn down in 1961.

For a time, the Nubble’s 3,000 pound fog bell could be heard by the keepers at Boon Island six miles away. The bell was later replaced by a diaphragm horn.”

Thanks for the above information to Cape Neddick ‘Nubble’ Light

or – red at night shepherds delight – red in the morning shepherds warning – great shot lois

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiii Steve … yes, I’ve heard the one about shepherds, too!!! I even tried googling the old saying to make sure I got it right and try to get the author, but not much luck. Glad you liked the shot!!

  • Gary Lengyel

    Gary Lengyel

Wow Lois, looks like the sky is on fire! Since this is a composite, have you thought of adding more clouds to the right of the lighthouse? Just a thought. Great image!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Gary!!!!! Thanks so much!!!! No, I like it this way … if you look closely, you can see the shadow of the lighthouse falling across the grass … I was delighted that I had a good cloud shot in my archives that would give me that kind of delineation. I really like the feeling of the clouds moving across the sky … kind of different. But don’t worry, I have tons more clouds shots from that night, plenty fulll sky, and I’ll be sure to use them again. And again … and … lol!!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied

  • Tom Gomez

    Tom Gomez

Fabulous work Lois. Now let me see if I have this right! One shot in the morning and one at night, does that mean the composite is at midday, or is it midnight – hehehe.

  • Lois Bryan replied

laughing ... WELL??? I guess midday as the “morning” was more like 10;00 ish And the “evening” was around 6 or 7:00 pmish?? Or … wait … no … er … oh … uhoh now I’m confused!!!!!

  • elisab

    elisab

That is one beautiful sky, and the lighthouse too!! Looks like the sky will catch the lighthouse on fire.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hey Elisa … yepper … I could have wrapped a whopper of a story around this one if I’d wanted … it does look like a fire. Was one of the weirdest skies we’ve seen around here. The clouds were coming in from the EAST .. which is almost unheard of here … and the sun was setting (in the west of course) so everything was lit up so unusually!!!

  • Ric Alexander

    Ric Alexander

Always a sucker for lighthouses. Well done Lois !

    sigfusson

Holy Crap that’s a gorgeous shot Lois. What an amazing sky. Hugs, S.

  • Lois Bryan replied

LOL!!!! Hey babes … ever so glad you got a kick out of this one … there’s a challenge somewhere and I just didn’t have the heart to put up that tired old original Nubble shot. Knew I had something else in here … but oh, how dull just the plain lighthouse tower looked against that weak white sky!!!! I just HAD to do SOMEthing!!! LOl!!!!

  • Marjorie Wallace

    Marjorie Wallace

Wow! This is amazing. We also use that saying here and how funny that you would blend the two. Thinking outside the box, for sure. Beautifully done and an instant favorite.

  • Lois Bryan replied

You use that old saying too?? Hey, notice our pals across the pond substitute shepherd for sailor!!! Isn’t that cool? So glad you enjoyed this shot … I had a bit of a struggle with it … the tower was dreadfully backlit in the original … but I think I got some definition out of it finally!!

  • Curtiss Simpson

    Curtiss Simpson

Dramatic Lois now wheres that instant fav button !!

  • Lois Bryan replied

LOL!!!!! Hey Curtiss … thank you so so much!!!!! Yeah, it does look dramatic!!!!! So glad you liked it!!!

  • jesika

    jesika

Excellent blending. I can’t see the join LOL
    jx

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiii Jesika … oh, this one was a breeze … in both the original background and in the cloudy sky shot, the light was coming from the same direction … so all the light reflection thingies on the light house could just stay in place. Plus, on the original the sky was that uggy white … SOOO easy to just make it go away!!!

  • CraigsMom

    CraigsMom

Wow Lois!!! It looks as if the light house were on fire, and that was clouds of smoke and fire. I love the detail in this, right down to the shadow of the lighthouse on the grass, and the small flower garden. Perfection!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Oh, thank you so much, sweetie!!!!! You’re so wonderfully observant … that’s soo cool … when I’m working on these things and trying to get everything “just so” I think to myself, no one is ever going to notice all this … how cool when someone does!!!!!

A beautiful compilation Lois and the resulting image is so beautiful and moody with no signs of any post processing at all, very well done indeed.
PS., there is another version of that old saying, shepherd’s delight rather than sailor’s, but I’ve heard people quote both many times,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hello, hello Rod!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!! Yes, I’ve heard the other version … seems our buddies on your side of the pond know it your way … most of us over here on the left bank seem to know the sailor version. Plus … my Dad was a Navy man … so that reinforces the way I learned it. Glad you didn’t see anything amiss with the compilation. I usually sweat bullets over these things, making sure every pixel is blended and buffed and polished. i didn’t do that on this one as both images had the light coming from the rear. Looking very close (which you can’t really see here) there is a bit of yellow along the outer edges of the catwalk and the rim of the tower … but as the “light” is supposed to be coming from back there I deliberately let it stay. These things are SUCH fun, lol!!!! Thanks so much for stopping by!!!!

Lois – this is absolutely beautiful!! I know the saying all too well, as I sailed most of my life and still use the sky to gage the next day’s weather!! I went to Maine pretty much every summer until I was about 18 or so – usually East Boothbay…I adore Maine – have never been to York, but we used to go to Pemaquid a lot – my Dad taught art lessons on the rocky coastlines!! Small world, eh? Congrats on the feature, as it is well merited! Have you sailed the Chesapeake at all?

  • Lois Bryan replied

Nooo kidding!!!! Oh, how cool is that!!!!!! It was so beautiful up there … I only wish we could have stayed longer. Well, maybe one day we’ll head back up there and not be in such a rush. And yes, I’ve sailed the Chesapeake many, many times.

Do you know Rock Hall and where the Gratitude Marina is at the end of Rt. 20? If so, there is a huge building right on the bay – we used to live there – it was an old cold storage building used during WWII! My Step-Mom bought it in 1976 and we totally revamped it and named it, “The Strawberry Factory.” To the right down the street is Swan Creek Marina! I just put up a pic of our dog Beau Geste running down the dock headed home. Gratitude Marina was our back yard and yes, do go back to Maine – it is a fabulous place to vacation!!! :))))

  • Lois Bryan replied

Oh, Polly … if ONLY I knew the area better … we adored it there and I thought I’d be able to coax the DH into another trip up coast this summer but it’s not to be this year. Oh OH what you’re describing sounds like something from a fabulous movie!!!!!! How FUN!!!! I’ll have to go visit Beau and see you pic!!!!!!

Actually, be glad that you didn’t go to Maine! I have two friends who have been there for most of the summer and the weather has been horrid…They had constant rain and if it wasn’t raining, the fog was hunkerin’ down – AYUH!! xoxo!! :)))

  • Lois Bryan replied

Oh, wow … REALLY!!!!!! We were there in September last year and it couldn’t have been more beautiful. We then went to the White Mountains (New Hampshire) and we got the rain and cool temps and fog then … but I did get a few shots off before the ick rolled in, lol!!!! You know how it is with vacations and weather … it’s a crap shoot, as they say!!!
