It’s got that “Nobody’s Home” look …
Back in the day when we wanted to visit, we tightened up our pincurls, tied our robes tight, slipped into our slippers, grabbed our coffee and walked next door. Although this wonderful old abandoned farm house is stuck out in the middle of (apparent) nowhere … it’s right smack dab ON route 30 just a bit west of Chambersburg, PA … and I like to think that the farm wives did visit back and forth, too.
Image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens on a bright and sunny, blue-skied July 12, 2009. Shutter 1/640, aperture f/11.0, exp -.33, iso 500. Post included Phun With Photoshop, levels, dodging, burning, selective coloring, in other words, the works, then addition of textures.

Another fantastic capture Lois. Funny how houses like that can be found every couple of miles the whole way along 30. Makes me wish for simpler times again.
Lois Bryan replied

Magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi sweetie!!!! Thank you, thank you!!!!
Peter Hill
It’s always a shame to see such craftsmanship go to ruin, but you have captured it with style and sympathy Lois. The loneliness of its plight comes through in a beautiful composition and treatment!
Lois Bryan replied
Ahhhh Peter … thank you so so much. I have such empathy for the sticks and bricks of our forefathers’ hard work. I was in the building industry for years, and architecture of any kind calls my name. But when I see old barns, and these wonderful old country homes falling into disrepair it breaks my heart a little because it truly is a sign of the times … and the ending of an era. I wouldn’t presume to take on the responsibility or crusade of “capturing” these magnificent structures for any lofty purposes of saving their likeness for generations to come. My endeavors are far more immediate. I see them … I love them … and I want to do something to let the world know that they were here and that they did matter.

Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!! Well … one more???? I’ve got another view of the farmhouse all ready to go … and I did the lighting similar to this one … won’t post it for a few days. But the fun part on this one was really all the fiddly bits in PS … all the grasses are are really gloriously green and lush … what fun I had!!!!!! It’s a little creepy to be able to change things SO MUCH!!!! Carolyn, thank you sooooooo much!!!!!!!!! Darling girl, you are!!!!!! Hugzzz!!!!

Lois Bryan replied
Hey Jennifer, thank you … you’ve got me blushing!!! This was one of those rare occasions where nearly every shot is usable … I think I’m developing a real “thing” for architectural photography … there are just sooo many possibilities with it!!!
Brandie1

Evelina Kremsdorf
Oooooooohhhhhhhh :) This is definitely one of my topics! Love differently looking houses!!! And making it look like an old painting was an awesome idea!!! How did you do it? Or what program did you use?... You can BM me to keep it confidential :)) I won’t tell!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Lina, honest and truly … it’s just photoshop!!!! Seriously just working the fiddly bits on the sliders and adjustments!!!! Then adding several textures … I’ve noted two of the sties I used … and even used one of my own … I’m trying to build up a texture library. Honest and true … nothing fancy. If I get really wild and crazy I always make note of what I did in the working title … I didn’t even make any notes on this one!!!!!

Curtiss Simpson
Oh my Lois I think its time for you to give up some of your secret processing tips LOL. Stunning piece here you took a picture of an old house and turn it into a turn of the century piece of art, its beautiful !!!
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks so much, Curtiss!!!!! But seriously, this one doesn’t really have anything fancy done to it … I was just telling Lina … just the fiddly bits with the sliders in PS!!! That and textures … and one of my own (I’m trying to build up a texture library) ... it was so uncomplicated that I didn’t even make note of what the heck I did, lol!!!!!!!
brian pendrey
stunning work
Lois Bryan replied
Hey Brian!!! Thank you!!!
CarolM
Great old farm house and you have given it such character and mood with your editing. Excellent piece of work Lois, and about those wives visiting back and forth in their robes; I can remember neighbors doing that too. You gave me a smile and a fun memory mentioning that. A great image and a fun memory. What could be better?
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Carol, bless your heart!!!!!! You’ve made my evening, then!! Glad you liked the image .. the house had such a forlorn look to it … and I so remember neighbor just opening the front door and yelling “Yooo hooo … anybody home??” ... and this poor house soo clearly had nobody home!!!! Sooo cool that you remember that visiting back and forth thing, too!!!!! Thanks again!!!!

Wasn’t sure the blues would work for the mood … but I think maybe it did. Have gone back and reworked the other shot to match, lol!!!! One never knows!!!!!
XVR Photo

Lois Bryan replied
Hello, hello Xenia!!!!!!!! Good … I’m glad you liked the light … I was going for mood … but I didn’t want it to be dark … kind of an odd combination!!

joak
it is a masterpiece…brilliant buildin whit a shame its left like this..you huv done it well pal
Lois Bryan replied
Ahh Joak … thank you my darling!!!! We’re in a middle of a big change here in the states. Not long ago, family farms fed us all and were a time honored and honorable way of life. But big corporations have taken over … and in many places we find all that’s left of our beautiful family farming: old barns falling down … wonderful old farm houses standing empty. So … it’s a favorite photographic subject of mine. Sometimes I like to add a bit of atmosphere to increase the emotional impact.
joak
progress who bloody needs it!...i noticed a few in yer profile they are aw great
Gene Walls
Glorious image, Lois!!! I love the textures and the lighting on “the dark side”, which give the house a very mysterious feeling. Fantastic work of art!
Lois Bryan replied
Gene, thank you!!!!! It was a puzzle to balance between the “dark” side and to try to still lend a feeling of sad nostalgia. I’m so glad you liked it!!!
parmi
What an awesome piece Lois! I love the texture you have given this. The sky is so brightly dark too, if that makes sense. Fantastic feel to it, well done!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much!!!! And yes, brightly dark is exactly right, I think, too!!! I had originally done this one and a companion shot that I’ll upload later in more golden … nearly sepia-ish … tones. But I was just getting tired of that … everything started looking muddy to me … so I decided to try something new. So glad you enjoyed the results!!!
