This little guy … and all his brothers and sisters … love to come take a dip in my pool every night (I think it rains toads here) ... and every morning it is my great pleasure to scoop them out … one by one … and set them free. They’re about the size of a fingernail … a regular fingernail, you know, the kind that scrubs floors and does a bit of gardening (when not taking pictures, that is), not those long fancy manicured types. I decided the other day that it was time these guys paid for all my rescue efforts with a little modeling. Fear not … after 5 minutes or so he was sent on his merry way!!!

Image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 60mm Nikon/Nikkor macro/micro lens on the morning of June 21, 2009. Shutter at 1/400, aperture f/10.0, exp. 0.00, iso 400.

this is the cutest image Lois, the lily has lots of colour but little guy sitting on yellow makes him or her so nicely visible and you sure can see how tiny it is

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thanks Lynda!!! A tree frog?? Maybe … I sure couldn’t tell ya … I’ve never seen frogs in trees here … farther south, though, yes. I wouldn’t have bothered posting this one except there’s a challenge and you know me!!! LOL!!!! Thanks for stopping by, hon!!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied

  • jacqi

    jacqi

What a scrumptious lily and such a cute wee toad. Have you tried giving one a kiss on the off chance of it being a prince in disguise? Mind you, you might have to kiss them all until you got the right one, lol

OMG, Lois, you found little frog , I call him Toad as my friend tool which I use daily at work. Adorable shot. And I see, you are using new camera, colors looks nice, can you use yours old lenses?

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiiii sweetheart!!!! Thank you!!!! Yes, I think you’re right … I think this is a toad. The toads are bumpy and gnarly and quite friendly as opposed to the frogs which are sleek and not nearly as friendly. At least, that’s my opinion of it all … after all these years and all these semi-aquatic critters!! Yepper .. taken with the new camera … and yep … all the lenses and even the SB400 speedlight work just great!! YAY!!

  • Nanagahma

    Nanagahma

Hey Lois. Last year we had literally hundreds of these at one time visit our pool. (They were in our skimmers. . .some dead, some alive). They’re the cutest little things, very harmless! It lasted for a couple of weeks, then they were gone. The larger frogs then started to appear. I posted pics of them on WS, and also wrote a little about them. This is a great photo! His drab appearance is so nicely off-set by the colorful lily. Great shot!

  • Lois Bryan replied

That’s exactly what’s happening!!!! I’d say we had at least a hundred about a week ago … every morning it’s been slightly less … but the rain has stopped for now, too, though, lol!!! And it really does rain frogs here (no one will believe me!!!) Every once in awhile I’ll get a normal size guy, but usually it’s the teensy ones. And you’re right. In another couple of weeks it’ll be all normal ones … I wonder if the babies grow that fast?? Those skimmers are a riot aren’t they … I NEVER know what I’ll find when i lift the lid. The most fun is when there’s a very slender little head peeking out of the hole .. you know what I mean???

  • Neophytos

    Neophytos

Exceptional macro Lois ,beautiful hues ..obviously the d300 works beautifully !!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thank you so much … I’m still getting the hang of it … but it’s an exceptional machine, for sure!!!!

  • Nanagahma

    Nanagahma

Two days ago I went to one of the skimmers and looked inside from the pool side and there’s a little head poking out, and I’m thinking it’s a frog. But then I look more closely and it’s a turtle. And I mean a BIG turtle, it almost fills up the entire circumference of the skimmer! The next thing I know, it’s figured out how to escape from the skimmer into the pool and out it comes to swim! It’s swimming near the pool edge so I grab it and put it on the deck and it very quickly walked towards the fence. I have no idea how it even got inside the fence because it was way too large to fit between the bars. It wandered off into our poolside flower bed and I have no idea where it went from there! There’s a pond across the street and through the neighbors yard and down the hill from there so I figured that’s where it came from originally. Pretty amazing surprise. Sometimes the things I find in those skimmers though is pretty scarey! :-)

  • Lois Bryan replied

I have to laugh .. had the same exact thing happen here last year … daggone turtle was … just like you said .. the diameter of the skimmer!!!! Ya just never know!!!! LOL!!!!

  • Irene Burdell

    Irene Burdell

I just noticed this little guy is doing a balancing act! His left front leg is up on the stamen (I think that’s what it’s called) and his right one on the petal. I had one sing to me too, or maybe it was talking. I was holding it in my hand and it’s like it was telling me to let it sit on the step and rest some more, it had just spent the majority of the night floating around in the skimmer and I think it was trying to catch its’ breath! Oh, and one morning I came out and a cute medium sized frog was just sitting on the top step of the pool, like it was waiting for me to come out and “play”. My husband had been out there a few hours before to do some pool chores and saw it. Later that day at supper he goes, “did you see a frog sitting on the step of the pool?” And I go, “yeah, it was still there, then when I dove into the pool, it hopped off the step and started swimming with me!” Love these guys.

  • Lois Bryan replied

LOL!!!! Great, great story, sweetie!!!!! I think you and I must be soul-mates … as much as we enjoy these little guys!!!! Had a regular sized one (bigger than a walnut, lol) in the skimmer today. He would have been a singer, I think … I didn’t have the right lens on the camera or he might have had to so some modeling for me too, lol!!!!!

  • marchello

    marchello

    A very cool capture…nice details and colors…just don.t kiss him or them..you don,t need handsome guys around….or do you…hum!

    John44

Ok Lois.. was waiting for this shot after reading hubbybought the 300 for you
Great shot here .. nice and sharp

Question.. How is the D300 feeling in your hands..
For myself I am in doubt to buy another camera..The Canon 5D mark II
wich is excellent .. OR.. or.. this model ..The Nikon D300 and the
    Nikor lens 18-200 VR ..
Curious to know what you think!
Thanks Lois .. smiles from Holland
    John

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiiii John dear!!!!! How wonderful to hear from you!!!! Now .. the D300 … although larger and heaver than the D40 … feels like it was BORN in my hands!!!! I think it would be a very comfortable fit in a man’s hands, too. I do not have the super add-on battery pack … that probably would make it quite a bit heavier and it does make it larger. But the standard works like a charm. My strongest recommendation would be to get to a camera shop and “try one on” ... to see if you like its shape and heft. There’s a sort of a grip on the right side … textured … which makes the handling of it very easy feeling. The camera’s controls themselves seem almost intuitive to me … the ease with which shutter and aperture can be switched around is astounding in comparison to the D40x. Lastly, I STRONGLY recommend the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens. If I’d gone ahead and gotten that one to begin with, as a friend of mine recommended, I wouldn’t have two lenses that I probably won’t get much use out of anymore … the 18-135 and the 70-200. Both lovely lenses .. .but the 18-200 works for both. Now, the only down side I’ve found is when my 70-300mm is all the way out, I had a bit of camera shake the other evening, but curiously, not this morning. I’ll have to get back to the gym and tighten up the arm muscles a bit, I guess, lol!!!!! Let me know which one you decide on, hon!!!!!! thanks so much for dropping by!!!!!!!! Hugzz!!!

Yes congrats on the feature, love the shot, and the little guy does make a great model. The flower was just the added touch. I love all the frog photos I see on here all I have here in SWFL at least what I have seen is the ugly bull frogs, that look like they have warts all over them. Not pretty for a pic. This little guy is perfect. And since you don’t have a problem finding them you should use him again to model on something else.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Karen!!!! Thank you, thank you!!! Yes, these guys are just adorable!!!! And don’t think your bull frogs aren’t cute in their own way … I bet if you started snapping them you’d fall in love with them too!!!! And you’re right … I’ve got a series of these guys in ivy leaves … one of which I might post at some point as well … they’re very willing to play along .. bless their hearts … after their night-long swim … they’re willing to do just about anything!!!!

  • John44

    John44

Lois you are a SUPER friend!!!
Thanks so much for a excellent detailed overview on your Camera.
Very convincing! And yes about the 18-200VR Nikkor ..
I even recommended that to another girlfriend in Ilinois after reading good tests about it, It is even slightly better than my Canon 18-200 IS (VR)
See my test yesterday with a new Camera here.. de Canon-5D-MarkII

I am still in doubt .. since I have payed a little fortune for Canon lenses to go with my two Canon camera’s Canon would be a logic choice.. However the D300 plus the Nikkor 18-200 VR is an excellent mariage for 95 % of your photo needs
Please give my respectfull regards to your hubby since he is a man with GREAT ideas! (other men buy there wives flowers.. yagh..lol)
Thanks dear Lois and have a great weekend

    John

  • Lois Bryan replied

John, I hear ya on the lens investment. I really do … my best advice is to go hold each!!!! Get a feel for each!!! Then … if you have a Penn Camera near you .. you can RENT them for a week or a weekend … and that should finalize the decision for you!!! Once you go Nikon with the 18-200mm vr … then you’ll find you’ll want a macro … then you’ll want something a little longer .. it’s never ending!!! So maybe renting both for a while … seeing how you like the way they operate, and most importantly, how you like the final images. If you don’t have a Penn Camera, maybe ask around … I bet others will do it as well.

A gorgeous floral macro image Lois, the richness of the colour tones and depth of detail are perfect for my taste, the water droplets are beautifully captured as well, that new toy is certainly producing the goods in your capable hands, many congratulations on the well deserved features,
    Regards, Rod.
