Our rural heritage of small family-owned farms is teetering on the edge of extinction, so they tell us, and as I drive the haunts of my childhood the visions of what were commonplace years back are slowly falling into disuse and disrepair, or worse, being replaced by subdivisions. It’s always a joy to discover another one … no matter what condition it’s in.

Image take in Davidsonville, Maryland on May 21, 2009 with the Nikon D40x and the 18-200mm vr Nikon/Nikkor lens with the cp filter. Post processing lncluded hdr from a single hand-held image at +/- 2 eval, no tripod. Sky darkened in Photoshop.

oh my goodness Lois !!! did you ever enhance this image perfectly, gotta luv it

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thanks so much, sweetie!!! It was a screamingly brilliant sunshine day … and a lot of what I shot got blown out (that interior shot of the wagon wheel for instance) ... but this was high enough shutter speed to get enough darkness in (which always freaks me out on the lcd screen, lol) to where the hdr could work its magic.

Hi Maureen!!!! Thank you very much!!!

  • Jim Harmon

    Jim Harmon

Awesome job on the composition and HDR. At first I was not a big fan of HDR. Then I started playing with it and realized how it could save a picture that you could not shoot because of poor light conditions. I felt it was worth the money for it.

  • Lois Bryan replied

So true, Jim!!!!! I think the final product is all up to the photographer … it’s fun to monkey around with and it does save a lot of otherwise ruined shots. The sun was wildly strong on this particular day and the front of the barn, with the flag, was practically black in the original. It saves lighting problems and it also brings out detail … what’s not to like??? Thanks for visiting, my old friend!!! Hugzzz

  • Hans Kawitzki

    Hans Kawitzki

Very eye catching and wonderful image, the HDR treatment works very well here.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Hans … thank you!!!!! Yes, the hdr really saved this one. The light was so powerful that the whole front of the barn was practically black in the original. I’m so happy I could salvage it!!

  • BigD

    BigD

Well done with the treatment, Lois. It appears you have found some settings that you do over and over on most of your images to make them look so warm.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi BigD!!!! Thank you so much, dear!!!!! As to settings … hmm … maybe??? Not sure … I know that on the camera I usually keep the white balance in the negative … that gives more warmth. Plus, I use the cp filter a lot … that pops color. Also, on my little Nikon you have the flexibility to adjust color intensity … and I usually go from most vibrant to plain vibrant … occasionally I’ll put it on “normal.” I doooo like color!!!! As to warmth in post processing … honestly, just about every shot I tinker with I do differently. In hdr for example, I can spent waaaaaay too much time fooling around with those little sliders … then push the finish button … and still not be happy … and start all over if I think the shot is worth the trouble. I hope that was some help??

  • Lois Bryan replied

    Hi Lori!!!! Thank you, sweetie!!!

  • TallGuy

    TallGuy

Stunning photo, especially from a ten year old..lol. Interesting that you seem to work your hdr from a single photo, it sounds like you create two differently exposed shots.. I could be mistaken. I make some of my hdr’s from single raw files, but all I do is go to “open photo” ( it has to be a raw file ) in Photomatix, not “generate hdr”.. Photomatix then generates a pseudo hdr ready for tonemapping.

  • Lois Bryan replied

You’re on the right track. My little Nikon D40x doesn’t bracket, and my ancient photoshop won’t cooperate with the raw converter that goes with my camera. Have tried a million times. So I can’t even hdr from raw. Which means some of my shots work … a lot don’t!! And even the ones that do are rarely as crisp as the ones done the proper way. But I’ll take a clean shot, pop it into photoshop and go up a bit and down a bit … thereby creating my second and third images. Then it’s off to Photomatix for a bit of fun!!! I’ll have to try your way of putting a raw into Photomatix … sounds like a lot less trouble … and it might create much better quality finished product!!!!! Thanks for the tip!!!

  • TallGuy

    TallGuy

Can I clarify.. that should be Photomatix (raw only) / file / open…. just so you don’t get confused with my “open file”.. I remembered wrongly :-)

  • Lois Bryan

    Lois Bryan

I think that’s how I understood your directions!! Thank you again!!!

  • TallGuy

    TallGuy

    Lois,
Adobe do a free raw converter... it should be able to convert your raw files…

  • Lois Bryan replied

that does look like the thing I’ve tried before … the problem is, my Photoshop is Version 8 … circa 2003 … plus I’m on a Mac. I just haven’t been able to get Photoshop to accept the plug-in. I can take and upload and edit raw in a very limited way in I-Photo … I just can’t get my Photoshop to accept them until I’ve converted them in I-Photo … and call me silly … but I don’t see the point to that, lol!!!! But your idea of putting a raw into Photomatix sounds interesting … I had no idea Photomatix would accept raw without it having been converted. Of course, Nikon’s idea of raw is an NEF file … so ... we’ll see!!!! there’s very likely a huge black hole in my understanding of how this all works .. complicates things when you’re not playing with a full deck, if you get my drift, lol!!!

  • TallGuy

    TallGuy

With Adobe DNG converter you use it to convert a whole folder of raw files at one go, then save the new dng raw files into a seperate folder…. there’s a good chance your Photoshop will accept the converted dng raw files..
    Supported software..
DNG is supported by Adobe® Photoshop® CS4, Photoshop CS3, Photoshop CS2, Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements 7.0, Photoshop Elements 6.0, Photoshop Elements 4.0, and Photoshop Elements 3.0 software.

    The mac version

I’ll leave you alone now.. I’m off to bed :-)

This is wonderful Lois. Your work is really resonating with me. You shoot the kind of things I like to paint. Beautful things!. I am do to paint a pic of a red barn on an Oregon farm – I wish it was shot this amazingly!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Leslie!!! thank you so much … what a lovely thing to say!!! You might try putting your red barn thru Photomatix … maybe some details or lighting will result that will inspire you a bit better?? I’m always amazed at what i can come up with once I start tinkering!!!
