Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion .. about an hour’s drive from Athens, Greece.

“The temple of Poseidon was constructed in approx. 440 B.C. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 m. The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle i.e. it had a front portico with 6 columns.
As with all Greek temples, the Poseidon building was rectangular, with a colonnade on all four sides. The total number of original columns was 42: 18 columns still stand today. The columns are of the Doric Order. They were made of locally-quarried white marble. They were 6.10 m (20 ft) high, with a diameter of 1 m (3.1 ft) at the base and 79cm (31 inches) at the top.
At the centre of the temple colonnade would have been the hall of worship (naos), a windowless rectangular room. It would have contained, at one end facing the entrance, the cult image, a colossal, ceiling – height (6m) bronze statue of Poseidon. Probably gold-leafed, it may have resembled a contemporary representation of the god, appropriately found in a shipwreck, shown in the figure above. Poseidon was usually portrayed carrying a trident, the weapon he supposedly used to stir up storms.”

... the above abridged from Wikipedia.

I took this image with my little Olympus C5000 zoom in August of 2005. A bit of Photoshop work has taken place … cloning out tourists, adding a new sky and a texture layer among others.

I remember you posting some images of the temple on WS but this one is so much better here on RB Lois or is it the extra post processing you’ve done to it, either way, it’s superb,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Rod, thank you so very much!!!!! Yes, this is one that was on WS … I had cleaned it up and removed the tourists (boy, that took forever, lol!!!) ... but nothing else. The rest I did today just for the fun of it. I’m sooo glad you liked how it turned out … this whole photoshop thing just opens up a world of possibilities … the imagination goes wild!!! I remember this shot, or a shot like it on WS. It is so stunning, and the post processing is excellent. Love it!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Yes, the original … or rather … the original sans all the touristas, lol … made a nice splash at WS … was featured a couple of times. The new sky treatments were all done today. I’m glad you liked the new version … I really hesitated doing it and had actually uploaded the no-tourist version weeks and weeks ago, but never made it public.

    monocotylidono

A beautiful take on Sounio, Lois. One of my favorite escape drives, when I grew up in Athens. Of course it is impossible to get that kind of sky in Athens :-) but the PP here has set off the temple nicely with a very dramatic effect. I wish I had seen the original too!

  • Lois Bryan replied

    Your wish is my command!!

... this version may be more familiar to your eyes … you say the sky I set in (taken in my backyard) is impossible in Athens?? WOW!! I Didn’t realize that!!! Well, artistic license and all that, right?? Either way, I’m tickled that you enjoyed it. I have so many images from Greece … slowly, slowly I’m getting into them and fixing them up … all were taken long before I was even vaguely camera-savvy … so all need a bit of tinkering. Thanks so much for visiting and for your lovely note!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied

actually … just for the sake of keeping the record straight, this isn’t the “original” per se … as the original was pretty washed out AND was full of people / tourists walking around!!!!

  • Lorraine Parramore

    Lorraine Parra...

As you know I’m not a big ‘tinker’ fan generally, lol, but your tinkering with this shot is a vast improvement on the original, looks more awesome and inspiring. Well done

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Lorraine … thank you, sweetie!!!! If you ever get the itch to “tinker” watch out, my girl!!! It is some kinda addicting!!!! Still in my defense, I put up plenty of straight photography shots as well, lol!!! I guess I’m a typical woman … can’t make up my mind which I like best!!!

  • Ted Byrne

    Ted Byrne

The powerful way you have enhanced the diagonals is entrancing Lois. One senses the magic that the ancients must have felt as they peered upon the temple from this spot.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Oh, Ted!!!!! You observant thing, you!!! I can’t put anything over on you!!!! Thank you!!! I took my cue from a slant in the white cloud peak … which for some serendipitous reason matched the slant that the grasses were waving in!!! (it was a WILDLY windy day!!) And I’m glad you sensed the magic … I was so hoping to add that feeling!!! YAY!!! You’ve made my day!!!!

  • Katerina Williams-Mourouna

    Katerina Willi...

Having visited Sounion many years ago-this shot really brought back all the mystery and amazement I felt then. It is an awe inspiring place-even moreso than the Acropolis (my humble opinion) because there is less crowds (depending on when you visit)-and also the Acropolis is undergoing heavey construction. Each place has its magic, as almost every place the world over, not just Greece…I Love This Shot-both in fact, the darker one is a bit scarry, more mystical-I can just imagine Posiodon in a rage over something…the sky darkening, and his wrath forthcoming…

  • Lois Bryan replied

Katerina, thank you so so so much for your note!!!! I completely agree with you … there really WAS something about Sounion!!! We were there even before they opened on a wildly windy morning … I was “swept” away in more ways than one!!!! I had exactly the same reaction as yourself … there really was something magic about this place … maybe it was the lack of crowds, maybe just the incredible isolation .. maybe because there were no distractions … just this one, lonely, magnificent temple. Or, maybe, the tortured soul of King Aegeus still haunts these ancient rocks. I’m glad you approve of my tinkering. I had uploaded the original ages ago … but was never quite satisfied with it. I’m glad I waited until I had a bit more Photoshop know-how under my belt. I like an image to have an “emotion” ... and while the blue sky version does have one as well … I wanted a bit more drama. Thanks again … I really appreciate your visit!!

Fantastic. I saw this in 1976 when I was serving on HMS Ark Royal. You’ve really done a marvellous work with this epic site. Regards, Don.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Don thank you so much. It’s a real treat to me when someone who’s actually seen the original enjoys my interpretation. I’m totally caught up in the mythology … which I’m sure you know about but which I didn’t include with this image. Still, I wanted to bring out the mood … I’m so glad you stopped by and left your lovely note!!! Thank you again!!!
