Afternoon siesta is still a popular tradition in the Southwestern US, as evidenced by the peacefully dozing little owl found here in the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, near Tucson, on April 17, 2009. I tried gently waking him, but thought better of shouting “MOUSE!” ... although now, as I’m looking back over all the slammed-shut eye shots in my computer … maybe I should have??

Image taken with the Nikon D40x and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens at shutter 1/160, and f/5.6 ap. Exp 0.00 and iso 200.

  • Gilberte

    Gilberte

Well taken Lois…I have never seen an owl in my garden

  • Lois Bryan replied

Our garden backs up to the woods and we hear them all the time … we can even “talk” to them … call out at night … and they’ll answer!!! But I’ve only seen them a few times. They’re nocturnal. This particular guy I found out in Arizona on my trip last week at the Senora Desert Museum … “museum” being a very broad brush term as everything is mostly outside.

Absolutely love owls – been tryin’ to capture an owl in the park here for months with no success!!! This is a really sweet capture even with the eyes closed – he’s adorable!!!!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiiii Lori … well, see, the trick with owls is, they’re nocturnal … and they sleep during the day … as evidenced by my little buddy!!! Finding them awake in daylight is petty rare. I haven’t seen them here at our house in daytime in a long, long time. But keep looking!!! And let me know when you get your shots!!!

Congratulations on getting an Owl. Beautiful shot. Funny how every photographer wants to get an Owl and believes it may never happen, then out of the blue one jumps out seemingly just for you..lol

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hey Franklin!!!!!!! heavens … how could I have missed your great note!!!!! thank you!!!! This particular shot wasn’t exactly in the wild, per se … this “museum” is like a huge preserve with lots of animals here and there. I was very lucky this guy happened to be taking his afternoon nap near where i was walking, lol!!!!!!! I DO wish he’d have opened his eyes, tho!!!!! LOL!!!! Thank you again!!!
