(Disclaimer … NO disrespect intended toward our fine women in uniform!! You’d have to be a fan of 1930’s or 1940’s era movies to catch the reference, lol!!! A la Mickey Rooney??)
One of my all-time favorite moments captured in my garden last summer. Two little skippers in a mighty clash!!!!
Image taken with the Nikon D40x and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens on July 15, 2008. Shutter speed 1/200, aperture f/5.6, exposure +.33, iso 200. Late afternoon / early evening light. Post processing included some duding up of the two somewhat raggedy coneflowers in the foreground with the Wacom Intuos4 tablet in Photoshop.

Lois Bryan replied
and you know meeee, there’s mooooore!!! They can be quite colorful, like this guy … or with dramatic black spots, or a plain golden brown.
linaji

Lois Bryan replied

GCAPARO
Lois, not sure what to say, breathtaking image, love it lots!!!!!!!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Graham!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!! I’m so tickled that you liked this one!!!
jesika
To get ONE butterfly in flight is hard enough, but TWO!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s the suggestion of the insect which appeals, the flowers are the focus & the butterflies a double bonus. Nice one, a super shot
BTW, there are babies in your inbox!

Lois Bryan replied
hiii sweetie!!!! So glad you liked this one … I’ve been sitting on it forever, and there’s a challenge in M&A, flying or floating in mid-air … and I just thought I’d about done to death everything I’d already uploaded. And what’s this?? BABIES? They HATCHED ALREADY????? Oh my heavens!!!!! Off I gooooo!!!!!

Visual Inspi...
Beautiful capture.. I know how hard these hummingbird bugs are to photo!! Wonderful ;0) rhonda
Lois Bryan replied
thank you so much, Rhonda!!!
Visual Inspi...
Actually, it is a hummingbird moth ;0)
Lois Bryan replied
Hii Rhonda!!! Yes, the hummingbird moth is hard to capture .. they’re much more shy than the skippers. I have a couple of shots of them that are not bad … been meaning to upload one or two … but they are quite different from the skippers. The hummers are a bit larger. Now … where did I put those shots??? LOL!!!!!
Lois Bryan replied
this is the fellow that we call a hummingbird moth around here … as you can see his little … uhhh … bum … is quite a bit larger!!! He is, honestly, nearly as big as our hummingbirds!!!
kathy s gillen...
fantastic capture, great shutter speed
Lois Bryan replied
thanks, Kathy!!! It was getting late in the afternoon .. not strong, bright light, so I couldn’t go much higher. I’d have loved to get more of the wing action, but this is fun, too.

This is a copy and paste comment that I’m leaving on all work that I see:
I’m behind on supporting fellow artists’ work but I’m making a diligent effort to see, support and comment on as much work as I can. Hopefully, you won’t mind a generic comment- but I truly appreciate your work!
Lois Bryan replied
Awww Jerame, darlin’ ... don’t worry about little me!!!!! Hugzz!!

Haven’t a clue about what a skipper is but a great and fun shot. I’ve seen hummingbird hawk moths on holiday and even once one right outside my bedroom window here in Scotland ( must have been on its holidays) but it didn’t look like your skippers and I was too entranced watching it to go and find the camera.
Lois Bryan replied
They’re members of the butterfly family. VERY adorable little guys … I love them!!! I’ll have to post a full sizer of the humming bird moth … I have several shots of them, too, but I’m not particularly crazy about the shots. Here’s another shot of a skipper … different from the ones in “Turf Wars” and not the same as the colorful fella I included in comments above … but still awfully pretty:
amko

elfie
This is awesome,,I believe these are echinachea flowers?
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Elfie … yep … they’re called echinacea or cone flowers here … and the bees and the butterflies just love them!!!!! They’re a nice enough flower, but get pretty raggedy after they’ve been around a while … but they’re so worth it for the bugs!!!
Stephen Thomas
