We had a little snow here in Maryland last week, and I was so hoping some of my Cardinal buddies would come visit the feeders!!! Here’s one of the males … giving me “the look” that says “Hope she filled the feeders!”

Image taken on February 2, 2009 with the Nikon D40x, using the 70-300mm VR lens.

The Cardinals or Cardinalidae are a family of passerine birds found in North and South America. The South American cardinals in the genus Paroaria are placed in another family, the Thraupidae (previously placed in Emberizidae).
These are robust, seed-eating birds, with strong bills. The family ranges in size from the 12-cm, 11.5-gram Orange-breasted Bunting to the 25-cm, 85-gram Black-headed Saltator[verification needed]. They are typically associated with open woodland. The sexes usually have distinctive appearances; the family is named for the red plumage (colored cardinal like the color of a Catholic cardinal’s vestments) of males of the type species, the Northern Cardinal.
The “buntings” in this family are sometimes generically known as “tropical buntings” (though not all live in the tropics) or “North American buntings” (though there are other buntings in North America) to distinguish them from the true buntings. Likewise the grosbeaks in this family are sometimes called “cardinal-grosbeaks” to distinguish them from other grosbeaks. The name “cardinal-grosbeak” can also apply to this family as a whole.
Most species are rated by the IUCN as least concern, though some are near threatened.”

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Anwar!!! Thank you so much … I’m glad you like our little cardinals … they are such good fun to watch!!

  • sunshine0

    sunshine0

LOL, guess I need to clean my windows! I have sat for hrs,(no kidding) at my big bay window in my dining room waiting for the birds. I have a bird feeder set up right infront of the window. I have been able to take photos of them at the feeder but not on the trees. I think my cats don’t help either,LOL!

  • Lois Bryan replied

OOO!!! Well, that’s not good!!! Usually once they know the food is there you can’t keep them away!!! Try this … make sure your food is black oiler sunflower seeds … make sure there’s at least a small area where you can put feed down on a flat surface, a lot of birds (cardinals) prefer to ground-feed, and go out and get some suet cakes and hang them (you’ll have to buy a weird little wire cage thing) on or very near the main feeder. If you can find a peanut suet cake (that hasn’t been recalled in the salmonella scare?) ... that would be perfect … they LOVE peanut butter … or just rub peanut butter on some pine cones. Once they know you’re a dependable food source, you should be fine!!!!! Let me know how it goes!!!!!

    This is beautiful!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiiii Sharon!!!! Thank you so much, hon!!! Yes, I think we can start to expect jonquils and daffodils in about a month or so!!! YAY!!! The cardinals are very skittish here, too!!! I shoot mine from inside the kitchen … they come for the seeds and suet cakes I set out … but if they see any kind of movement, off they go!!!!!

  • John Beamish

    John Beamish

Great captur, Lois. I have a heck of a time getting a good shot of these beautiful birds, you have nailed this one.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi John!!! yes, I agree the cardinals are very skittish!!! I actually coax them to me by putting out black oiler sunflower seeds … and remembering to put some down on the ground as they prefer to ground feed!!! Why not set up something interesting near a window … old wood or something … hide some seeds there … and it probably won’t take long for you to have lots of pretty red guests!!!!!

  • Ronald Rockman

    Ronald Rockman

Perfectly wonderfull composition Lois, I love the position of the birds claws on the branch.
    Cheers,
    Rock

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hello Ronald!!! Thank you so much!!!! And you noticed the claws too … I’ve sat here, staring at the position of those claws, more than once. I think what throws my eye is that the bird’s left leg (right as you’re looking at it) is hidden by the branch … so all the eye sees is the claw seemingly disconnected from the bird. A bit of a very subtle optical illusion??? Thanks again for dropping in!!!!

  • CarolM

    CarolM

He’s so pretty!! We don’t have cardinals where I live. Great close shot. So pretty with the little bit of snow on the brances.

  • Lois Bryan replied
