We had a little snow here in Maryland last week, and I was so hoping some of my Cardinal buddies would come visit the feeders!!! Here’s one of the males … giving me “the look” that says “Hope she filled the feeders!”
Image taken on February 2, 2009 with the Nikon D40x, using the 70-300mm VR lens.

The Cardinals or Cardinalidae are a family of passerine birds found in North and South America. The South American cardinals in the genus Paroaria are placed in another family, the Thraupidae (previously placed in Emberizidae).
These are robust, seed-eating birds, with strong bills. The family ranges in size from the 12-cm, 11.5-gram Orange-breasted Bunting to the 25-cm, 85-gram Black-headed Saltator[verification needed]. They are typically associated with open woodland. The sexes usually have distinctive appearances; the family is named for the red plumage (colored cardinal like the color of a Catholic cardinal’s vestments) of males of the type species, the Northern Cardinal.
The “buntings” in this family are sometimes generically known as “tropical buntings” (though not all live in the tropics) or “North American buntings” (though there are other buntings in North America) to distinguish them from the true buntings. Likewise the grosbeaks in this family are sometimes called “cardinal-grosbeaks” to distinguish them from other grosbeaks. The name “cardinal-grosbeak” can also apply to this family as a whole.
Most species are rated by the IUCN as least concern, though some are near threatened.”

........ which must be a lot, I suspect
Lois Bryan replied
... laughing … yes, he IS a cool little birdie!!!!! But I’m sure he thinks his top-knot is glorious!!!!! And I freely admit, I doooooo spend a lot of time at the kitchen French doors, pointing and snapping away at my feathered guests!!! You’d think by now they’d be used to me!!!!!!
MICKSPIXPHOTOS
BEAUTIFUL color and detail, Lois. Outstanding capture.
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Mick!!!! Thank you!!!!! It’s kind of hard to get good detail when you’re shooting through tempered French door glass AND a storm door … especially when there’s no sunlight!!! LOL!!! But I try!!!

~A
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Antonio!!!! Don’t try to go to the birdies, have them come to you!!! find a good window that gets sun on something outside, but not so much falling right on the window … and set feeders up within good view … then just grab your camera and a cup of coffee and sit back and wait!!!
Lisawv

... laughing … Jan … you just want my cardinals!!!! I know you!!! Thank you, thank you, sweetie!!! I’ve got male and female shots in here somewhere … taken in the light … that I like much better. Lyn Evans
Wow…Lois…this is so beautifully done. Fabulous selective colouring and wonderful detail.
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Lynnie!!!! Thank you, sweetie!!!! But no, this isn’t selective coloring. This is how gray a day it was!!!! No true sunlight at all … just the gray!!! But I think the red came through fairly well!!! Thank you again!!
Bridges
Wonderful image Lois! Sharp, nice catch-light in the bird’s eye, background nicely knocked out of focus. Very well done!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you, thank you!!!!! I credit the lens … it’s the Nikon 70-300mm VR … and even through double insulated French door glass plus storm door glass … it does a nice job. And it never disappoints when it comes to the bokehs. Thank you again!!!
Jeffrey Palm
and I would happily enjoy all of them too!

This is a superb shot Lois!! That’s a gorgeous grey background with just a hint of gold shimmer… but he’s certainly the star of the show here, in his outstanding red! Perfectly composed… Indignantantly glorious!!
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiiii DJ!!! So glad you enjoyed this one … the grey is the color of the day … there was no sunlight to work with … but I think these guys just glow all by themselves, lol!!! Thank you!!!!! Hugzz!!!
budrfli

Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Sandy!!!! Thank you, sweetie!!! I’m with you … the zip of the red in the white is like an electric charge!!! I love seeing them in winter!!
sunshine0
Oh Lois, you outdid yourself on this one! I am an avid bird watcher and lover!!!! Can never get a good photo of one though. Great job!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Marie!!!! Thank you!!! Oh, it’s easy!!! You have to have a bird feeder set up near a good window … then grab a cup of coffee, your camera and wait!!! And it’s helpful to have a comfy chair, too, by the way, lol!!!
anwarsalim
What a wonderful image… love the cute expression, she look feeling cold. Love the contrast.. So stunning image.. Thank you my friend to give our the opportunity view it from you
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Anwar!!! Thank you so much … I’m glad you like our little cardinals … they are such good fun to watch!!
sunshine0
LOL, guess I need to clean my windows! I have sat for hrs,(no kidding) at my big bay window in my dining room waiting for the birds. I have a bird feeder set up right infront of the window. I have been able to take photos of them at the feeder but not on the trees. I think my cats don’t help either,LOL!
Lois Bryan replied
OOO!!! Well, that’s not good!!! Usually once they know the food is there you can’t keep them away!!! Try this … make sure your food is black oiler sunflower seeds … make sure there’s at least a small area where you can put feed down on a flat surface, a lot of birds (cardinals) prefer to ground-feed, and go out and get some suet cakes and hang them (you’ll have to buy a weird little wire cage thing) on or very near the main feeder. If you can find a peanut suet cake (that hasn’t been recalled in the salmonella scare?) ... that would be perfect … they LOVE peanut butter … or just rub peanut butter on some pine cones. Once they know you’re a dependable food source, you should be fine!!!!! Let me know how it goes!!!!!
Wanda Raines
Beautiful!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you, sweetie!!!!

Gazart
Incredible colour- contrasts so well with the subdued background. Perfectly placed- lovely composition.
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much!!! If you’ve never seen a cardinal, the color is a bit of a shock, probably!!!! But they truly are a magnificent creature and we love them here!!!
Sharon Mau
He is so darling with his feathers fluffed out like that! This is wonderfully composed Lois and the colours are very pretty. The snow appears to be melting, hopefully spring will arrive soon. We have many cardinals here on the island and it is not easy to get so close to one.
This is beautiful!
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Sharon!!!! Thank you so much, hon!!! Yes, I think we can start to expect jonquils and daffodils in about a month or so!!! YAY!!! The cardinals are very skittish here, too!!! I shoot mine from inside the kitchen … they come for the seeds and suet cakes I set out … but if they see any kind of movement, off they go!!!!!
Carol Barona
Great capture, beautiful setting
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Carol!!! Thank you!!!
Marjorie Wallace
A lovely and vivid capture. An instant favorite for me. It has been snowing here again,, but I thought that I would make a run to the store. As I steped outside, I could hear so many birds, I was amazed. I grabbed my camera to try and get some shots, but could not get close enough to get any good ones. I will simply have to enjoy yours. LOL!!! This one is stunning.
Lois Bryan replied
AWWW … you’re more than welcome to come visit my birdies any day!!! You know, now that you mention it, I’ve been hearing the spring birds, too!!! I heard a bluebird today!!! They start scoping out the blue bird boxes in January here, believe it or not!!! YAY!! Spring will be here soon!!

rodsfotos
What a beautiful and welcome spot of colour the cardinal makes in the midst of Winter, a great pose and lovely image Lois though it does look to be suffering a bit from the cold conditions,
Regards, Rod.
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, thank you so much, Rod!!! They are here year round … and seem to do okay in winter … but I’m careful to keep the feeders full for them!!! Do you have cardinals in your neck of the woods??
doreen01
Excellent!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Doreen!!! Thank you so much!!
John Beamish
Great captur, Lois. I have a heck of a time getting a good shot of these beautiful birds, you have nailed this one.
Lois Bryan replied
Hi John!!! yes, I agree the cardinals are very skittish!!! I actually coax them to me by putting out black oiler sunflower seeds … and remembering to put some down on the ground as they prefer to ground feed!!! Why not set up something interesting near a window … old wood or something … hide some seeds there … and it probably won’t take long for you to have lots of pretty red guests!!!!!
Ronald Rockman
Perfectly wonderfull composition Lois, I love the position of the birds claws on the branch.
Cheers,
Rock
Lois Bryan replied
Hello Ronald!!! Thank you so much!!!! And you noticed the claws too … I’ve sat here, staring at the position of those claws, more than once. I think what throws my eye is that the bird’s left leg (right as you’re looking at it) is hidden by the branch … so all the eye sees is the claw seemingly disconnected from the bird. A bit of a very subtle optical illusion??? Thanks again for dropping in!!!!
CarolM
He’s so pretty!! We don’t have cardinals where I live. Great close shot. So pretty with the little bit of snow on the brances.
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks so much Carol … I’m constantly amazed at the number of people who don’t have these birds … they’re quite hardy … and numerous here!!!!! Thanks again!!!
