This is the interior of Jackson’s Mill Covered Bridge which is located about 15 minutes southwest of Breezewood, PA on Jackson’s Mill Road. Image taken October 12, 2008 with the Nikon D40x and the 18-135mm Nikon lens. Post processing included a little Photoshop touch up and Photomatix HDR.
Oh, by the way, the camera was hand-held … and I was flat out on my knees, bending backwards pointing the camera UP (like the limber young thing I am haha) ... oblivious to the guy in the black pick-up who was waiting for me to get out of his way.
Hey. Ya gotta doooo what ya gotta dooooo!!
Ok, there’s another crazy PS to this shot that I hope you all get a kick out of. BigD very sweetly was wondering what was going on with the bottom left of this shot. Well, it’s sunshine coming through the small windows up under the roof, and the too-strong light completely escaped me when I was working on it. Hilarious … I know, kind of like a mom not seeing her kid being a holy terror in the grocery store. Oh my .. too much information there, huh. ANYHOW … BigD and I batted the situation (with the photo, not my kid) around for a while. On his suggestion, I tried levels, burning, and I gave it the old highlights / shadows trick too. Nothing. The sunlight had completely burned out that portion. Of course, the more I looked at it, the more it bothered me.
I said to him, well, the only thing I can think to do would be to clone it to death, tedius and time consuming … or … adding another layer, flipping it, and erasing around everything but the sunlit part. I tired it … and … it WORKED!!! HAH!!!
And all this withOUT a tripod, NO measuring … just the old eyeballs!!! Soooo … I hereby dedicate this little image to BigD!!! Thank you dear!!!!!!!
I’ve left one of the original sunlit versions here for purposes of comparison.

Lois Bryan replied
haha … Thanks hon … honestly, whoooooo kneeewwwwww anyone was back there!!!!! LOL!!!! It was fun to set up … but I had no clue what I was doing!!! Hi Mark!!! Thank you, thank you!!!! Yes, isn’t the light on the beams interesting!!! It must be the reflection of the sunlight on the water!! I’ve got several shots of the interior of another covered bridge, but they were taken on a very gray, colorless day … and didn’t turn out as well at all. Thanks again for stopping by!!

Rick & Deb Larson
Hi Lois…..*CONGRATULATIONS on the feature of this covered bridge shot, loved the story behind the capture…..we had a time or two like that when we were back east a couple years ago, although I have to admit…..neither Rick or myself were on our knees bent over backwards LOL, yep, a photographer has to do what a photographer has to do!! Keep ‘em coming Lois!! Great shot and Photoshopping, well done. Take Care :-)
Lois Bryan replied
ooooo Thank you, darlings!!!!!! I’ve been sitting on this one and some interior shots from one of the other covered bridges, but just not happy with them until I tried the HDR. It’s tricky and most times I’m not happy with the results, but this one did work. The flipped layer trick was just sheer luck … I had no idea what I was doing and no confidence that it would work … but what FUN!!!! LOL!!!! Hugzzz!!!

Lois ,... what an amazing bridge. And a wonderful result. The saga of the shot had me smiling. I teach Pilates so understand about the getting down to it!!! As for the post production work … I can see why you achieve such a great standard. You persist!!
Lois Bryan replied
What a lovely, lovely comment!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!! Yes, you can tell from the shot that I was doing something odd, lol!!! It truly was a “do the limbo” move … I wonder if the guy in the black pick up is still laughing at me!!! And you know, you’re right. If I like a shot, I’ll beat the poor thing to death!!! Can’t tell you how many hours I’ve wasted working on an image … and yet NEVER post it. I must be getting picky in my old age, lol!!!!!
