Hope Not Forsaken

Featured # 1 Artists of RedBubble February 20, 2009.

I loved the look of the long, late afternoon shadows across the snow on this day. This old farmhouse on the knoll fascinates me every time I drive by … probably more so than any grand mansion ever could. It’s vacant now, has been for as long as I can remember … the torn-off porch was the last indignity. But somehow, love and laughter remain. It must have been a very happy home, once.

Image taken on January 20, 2009 with the Nikon D40x, using the 18-200mm VR lens and the CP filter … along Route 97 near Glenwood, Maryland. Cloning of snow spots (from an earlier shoot) and levels and shadows & highlights were used in Photoshop, and the image was then put through Photomatix’s HDR process.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thank you so much, Clive!! Right in front of this area is a long long pasture … and it’s usually filled with Canada Geese!!! LOTS of them!!! But not on this particular day. As to the old house, I’d love to try and get inside one day, when the light is right!!!

It’s 40 degrees [that’s approx 105 F ] here today…..way too hot & it’s going to be that for the next 5 days….the hottest sequence in southern Victoria for 100 years!!!!! I could just imagine rolling in that snow…
    It looks so inviting…..
    Love & blessings to you
    Lee

  • Lois Bryan replied

Dear Lee!!!! My heavens, that is hot!!!!! We get spells like that here (Washington DC metro area), too, in summertime. And ooooooh … the humidity!! I HATE it!!! Thank heavens for air-conditioning!!! I grew up in a day and age before AC was as common as it is now, and I vividly remember the loooooong hot summer days, hoping for a breeze and a thunderstorm to blow it all away!!!!! Sooo glad you liked my little snowy shot!! We’re due for more snow by morning … and even more later in the day!!!! I’ll upload a few more for you, if you like??? LOL!!! Take care and stay out of the heat down there!!!

Lovely photo gorgeous light. Nice one Lois. dp

  • Lois Bryan replied

Good morning, dp!!! Thank you … yes, the light is a big, big part of this one, I think, too!!!!

  • Ted Byrne

    Ted Byrne

The composition is wonderfully ideosincratic here with your jewel planted stage dead-center. And in winter everything should be DEAD-center. Yet… yet… through such an imaginative use of light, and palette your whorls of texture set off the snug little gem as a refuge… a box filled with physical and emotional warmth. A box glittering with optimism.

Nope, I’d not title this Forsaken. For someone lost and exposed to nature’s extremes, it works in this frigid place just as an oasis works in its torrid place.

    I’d rename it hope.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Dear Ted … thank you so much … I’m so happy to have you visit and to hear your thoughts. Your photographic work is nothing short of genius … I’m honored beyond words!!! On your suggestion, I’ve decided to change the title … and I like it much better!!!! Thank you again!!!

  • Colleen Farrell

    Colleen Farrell

Breathtaking, Lois! The colors and light/shadows are very powerful and compelling. I especially love your POV and comp, the way the trees seem to be reaching out for the house. There is an old farmhouse near me that I feel the same way about; I’m totally fascinated by it. It appears to be abandoned, is very old and rundown, but has so much character. I imagine it holds many generations of memories. :)

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Colleen!! Thank you sooo much!! I agree … the older structures … there’s an ALMOST visible something there that attracts those of us who care to look closely. The camera sometimes brings it out!!! I’ve shot this particular place on several different occasions … the late day light really adds so much. The branches leading the eye to the house … oh, how I wish I could take credit for that … but I was honestly just trying to get the house and the slope of the hill and the shadows without the branches being in the way. Only when I put the image onto the computer did I realize what the branches were doing!!!! As my daddy used to say, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than smart!!! LOL!!!! Now, you’ll have to go shoot YOUR old farmhouse!!! And let me know when you’ve posted it!!!!!
