I’m thrilled and honored and humbled to report that “Industrial Decay” has been nominated for entry into the prestigious group Pay It Forward by the darling, beautiful and talented Sandy - budrfli

who had this to say about my image:
“Not only is her art exemplary, but her attitude and joy is inspiring and full of excited joy! Everything she enters and every comment she writes makes me smile!”

Thank you Pay It Forward group, and thank you dear Sandy-budrfli!!!!!

I discovered this beauty on a side road, not far from Claysburg, PA. I don’t know what it was or what it manufactured. All around this area are lovely large farm homes … also in a state of sad decay.

Image taken December 28, 2008 with the Nikon D40x, and my new 18-200mm VR (YAY!) with the CP filter. I did some work on the sky (which was nasty white) to give it more of a moody appearance, gave it the old Orton, then added a dry brush layer.

A post script: Thanks to DDebil , I’m hearing that this structure is in all likelihood a feed mill where corn would be ground and molasses and other nutrients added to make feed for the hogs. Considering all of the large farms in the immediate area, this makes perfect sense!! Thank you, DDebil!!!

Industrial Decay belongs to the following groups:

  • Colleen Milburn

    Colleen Milburn

Gorgeous, Lois, I love great industrial images, of which this is one! Well done, indeed :-)

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thank you so much, Colleen!!!! I fell in love with it the minute I drove by. Not a clue what kind of business took place here … but my heart goes out to the people in the area who lose their jobs every time one of these amazing places closes down. From the looks of it, it must have been quite a while back.

  • Colleen Milburn

    Colleen Milburn

Yes, I understand the sadness of those who would have lost their jobs – but what joy these buildings still bring. I’d like to think the past workers’ souls still live there, but in much happier circumstances :-)

  • Lois Bryan replied

I love the way you think!!!!

  • Clark Thompson

    Clark Thompson

This is a very cold and austere photograph…. a definite departure from your other work, Lois. The overcast skies nicely accentuate the current condition of the plant. Even with the magnificent warm colors and lighting that you got, the theme still projects both gloom and disrepair. This certainly seems to be current sign of the time. It is thought provoking… I like it!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Clark … what a wonderful review!!! Yes, it’s very different … another example of the influence of these magnificent artists here at RB!!! As to this being a sign of the times, yes, in this particular area of PA, it certainly is … and I’m glad you find it thought provoking also. These kinds of places just eat away at me!!! I was sorely tempted to add, up in the description, “Buy American! Please!” but RB is such a multi-national organization, I didn’t think it would be appropriate. Thank you again for your thoughtful comment … I’ve enjoyed our “chat” and exchange of ideas very much!!

  • Patricia Montgomery

    Patricia Montg...

Lois, this is absolutely wonderful! You did a fabulous job with those skies and the other post processing, too!! I love old buildings like this and with your talent, you have given it new life!! Well done!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Patricia!! What a lovely, kind comment!!! Thank you so much … I was very, very disappointed in how my shoot yesterday went … up on the mountain the light was excellent … but by the time i got down and scouted around a bit … it was glary and flat. I’m glad I took the time to tinker with this particular image!!! Thank goodness for PS!!!

  • DDebil

    DDebil

I think that it is a feed mill. I have memories of my father driving loads of corn in his pickup to the local feed mill where they would grind the corn and add molasses and other nutrients to make feed for our hogs. The fragrance of the place is still with me when I see this excellent photo.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hey DD!!! Thank you sooooo much for clearing up the mystery of what this place was!!! I’m sure you’re right … I was right smack dab in the middle of a serious farming area. And thank you, too, for your lovely comment … I’m glad it brought back a memory … that’s one of the BEST parts of photography!!!

  • trueblvr

    trueblvr

Lois, only you could make such beauty out of decay.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiiiii Di, hon!!!!!! Oh, what a sweet, sweet comment!!!! Thank you, hon!!!!! How was your Christmas?? Everyone well at your house??? Happy New Year!!!!! Hugzzz!!!!

  • sigfusson

    sigfusson

well done Lois…did you also add this one to the Rusty, Crusty & Falling To Bits group? It’s perfect! Love the Orton Effect on this old relic of a structure. Cheers, S

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiiiii gorgeous!!!!! Thank you … thank you!!! Yes, it’s in the approval box over there. Hope they like it. Good old RB … I wasn’t going to bother with this image at all … in fact, I think I tossed several of this (thank heavens I kept a few). I was catching up on b-mails and saw that Metallic Junction was looking for industrial images!! Talk about timing!!! Glad you liked the Orton idea. I gave it a go with HDR but I don’t consistently have very good luck with that so thought I’d try Orton as an odd contrast … the softness added to the harsh subject matter. Thank you, hon, for stopping by!!! Hugs and Happy New Year!!!

That is pretty awesome looking Lois, I would have been exploring the heck out of this place!!!!! Can you imagine the photos you could have gotten inside this place, awesome work on this shot!!!!!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Oh, Ash, I know!!! I know!!! I think if I’d had the tripod with me I might have gone inside … if I’d had my HUSBAND with me I definitely would have!! Or maybe a reeeeeeealy big stick??? Maybe I’ll drag him along another time … as soon as ski season is over, of course!!! Thank you so much for your lovely comment!!!!!!! Hugzz!!!

  • Jason Connolly

    Jason Connolly

Isn’t it amazing how a rusty piece of junk like this can make for such a great shot?..
Keep shooting Lois, this is great work..

  • Lois Bryan replied

Jason … bless your heart … thank you!!! I think what makes things like this so appealing, at least to me, is the sense of lost opportunity … and the passing of an era. Romantic / historic / tragic … I guess I could go on … So glad you liked it!!!

  • Jeff Stroud

    Jeff Stroud

Great shot, glad you stopped to capture it!

Wow I am impressed with how many people commented on your work,,,way to go…love the building and I am a person who can vision changes and man a little paint would make this place look new…Very interesting. In fact, I once bought a house the neighborhood wanted to tear down and I bought it and fixed it all up, and they could not believe how nice the home turned out. Well, I am rambling, impressed in many areas with you and your work, Scott

  • Lois Bryan replied

Scott … thank you so much!! What a lovely compliment!!! And I loved your story about fixing up the house … this particular area of PA isn’t toooo depressed, but I can see that at one time, maybe as recently as 50 years ago, it must have been booming. I’ll have to upload some of the images of the surrounding homes and farms for you to get an idea of how sad things can be in some places. Thank you again for your note … nothing I like better than a good conversation about photography!!!

  • Bruce Dickson

    Bruce Dickson

Turning up the heat on this works wonders. Normally a bit shy on saturated colors but this time the rust looks even better and part of the total mood created.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thank you so much, Bruce! The Orton technique does wonders for cranking up the colors … and although I toned down the blur considerably, the colors remained. One thing I’m not, is shy about strong color … and I do hope I don’t overdo too often, lol!!! Thank you again for your thoughtful note!! I always love a good conversation about photography!!!
