who had this to say about my image:
“Not only is her art exemplary, but her attitude and joy is inspiring and full of excited joy! Everything she enters and every comment she writes makes me smile!”
Thank you Pay It Forward group, and thank you dear Sandy-budrfli!!!!!
I discovered this beauty on a side road, not far from Claysburg, PA. I don’t know what it was or what it manufactured. All around this area are lovely large farm homes … also in a state of sad decay.
Image taken December 28, 2008 with the Nikon D40x, and my new 18-200mm VR (YAY!) with the CP filter. I did some work on the sky (which was nasty white) to give it more of a moody appearance, gave it the old Orton, then added a dry brush layer.
A post script: Thanks to DDebil , I’m hearing that this structure is in all likelihood a feed mill where corn would be ground and molasses and other nutrients added to make feed for the hogs. Considering all of the large farms in the immediate area, this makes perfect sense!! Thank you, DDebil!!!

Industrial Decay belongs to the following groups:
*Amazing Orton Effect* - Limit 3/day , Abandoned Dark Creepy, All Around the Styles, Dilapidated Buildings, Metallic Junktion, Mills & Mines, Pay It Forward, PixElations - The Art of Photoshop, POSTED: No Trespassing, Rural Around The Globe, Rustic, The Keystone State - Pennsylvania, United States and Unwanted , Abandoned & Saved Through Preservation. Available for sale asGreeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints, Framed Prints and Posters

Lois Bryan replied
Hiii JK!! Yepper … I think these old places are great, too .. love hunting them down .. spent most of this weekend trying to find interesting old structures … mostly barns … but this one was worth keeping and playing around with, I thought!!

Leslie Battjes
Your post-processing is great, Lois! Really appealing :)
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Leslie!!! The light on this day was so nasty and flat … the shot did need a bit of a tune up in ps, I thought, lol!!! Thank you again!!!

Hiiii Barbara!!! Thank you, sweetie!!!! At first I gave it a nice sunny blue … and thought … naaaaah … not with this crazy old falling down place … and the rest was just fun!!! Glad you liked what I did!!! Hugzz!!!
Colleen Milburn
Gorgeous, Lois, I love great industrial images, of which this is one! Well done, indeed :-)
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Colleen!!!! I fell in love with it the minute I drove by. Not a clue what kind of business took place here … but my heart goes out to the people in the area who lose their jobs every time one of these amazing places closes down. From the looks of it, it must have been quite a while back.
Colleen Milburn
Yes, I understand the sadness of those who would have lost their jobs – but what joy these buildings still bring. I’d like to think the past workers’ souls still live there, but in much happier circumstances :-)
Lois Bryan replied
I love the way you think!!!!
George Lenz
Beautiful scenery…well done
Lois Bryan replied
Hi George … thank you so much!!!
Colleen Milburn
Ha! I love the way you love the way I think (I think)! Thanks, Lois :-)
Lois Bryan
SueAnne
Great treatment
Lois Bryan replied
Many thanks, SueAnne!!!
Clark Thompson
This is a very cold and austere photograph…. a definite departure from your other work, Lois. The overcast skies nicely accentuate the current condition of the plant. Even with the magnificent warm colors and lighting that you got, the theme still projects both gloom and disrepair. This certainly seems to be current sign of the time. It is thought provoking… I like it!
Lois Bryan replied
Clark … what a wonderful review!!! Yes, it’s very different … another example of the influence of these magnificent artists here at RB!!! As to this being a sign of the times, yes, in this particular area of PA, it certainly is … and I’m glad you find it thought provoking also. These kinds of places just eat away at me!!! I was sorely tempted to add, up in the description, “Buy American! Please!” but RB is such a multi-national organization, I didn’t think it would be appropriate. Thank you again for your thoughtful comment … I’ve enjoyed our “chat” and exchange of ideas very much!!
Patricia Montg...
Lois, this is absolutely wonderful! You did a fabulous job with those skies and the other post processing, too!! I love old buildings like this and with your talent, you have given it new life!! Well done!
Lois Bryan replied
Patricia!! What a lovely, kind comment!!! Thank you so much … I was very, very disappointed in how my shoot yesterday went … up on the mountain the light was excellent … but by the time i got down and scouted around a bit … it was glary and flat. I’m glad I took the time to tinker with this particular image!!! Thank goodness for PS!!!
DDebil
I think that it is a feed mill. I have memories of my father driving loads of corn in his pickup to the local feed mill where they would grind the corn and add molasses and other nutrients to make feed for our hogs. The fragrance of the place is still with me when I see this excellent photo.
Lois Bryan replied
Hey DD!!! Thank you sooooo much for clearing up the mystery of what this place was!!! I’m sure you’re right … I was right smack dab in the middle of a serious farming area. And thank you, too, for your lovely comment … I’m glad it brought back a memory … that’s one of the BEST parts of photography!!!
trueblvr
Lois, only you could make such beauty out of decay.
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiiii Di, hon!!!!!! Oh, what a sweet, sweet comment!!!! Thank you, hon!!!!! How was your Christmas?? Everyone well at your house??? Happy New Year!!!!! Hugzzz!!!!
sigfusson
well done Lois…did you also add this one to the Rusty, Crusty & Falling To Bits group? It’s perfect! Love the Orton Effect on this old relic of a structure. Cheers, S
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiiii gorgeous!!!!! Thank you … thank you!!! Yes, it’s in the approval box over there. Hope they like it. Good old RB … I wasn’t going to bother with this image at all … in fact, I think I tossed several of this (thank heavens I kept a few). I was catching up on b-mails and saw that Metallic Junction was looking for industrial images!! Talk about timing!!! Glad you liked the Orton idea. I gave it a go with HDR but I don’t consistently have very good luck with that so thought I’d try Orton as an odd contrast … the softness added to the harsh subject matter. Thank you, hon, for stopping by!!! Hugs and Happy New Year!!!
Kazzoom IPA
lovely capture Lois, well done sweetie
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiiiiii sweetie!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!
flyfish70
That is pretty awesome looking Lois, I would have been exploring the heck out of this place!!!!! Can you imagine the photos you could have gotten inside this place, awesome work on this shot!!!!!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Ash, I know!!! I know!!! I think if I’d had the tripod with me I might have gone inside … if I’d had my HUSBAND with me I definitely would have!! Or maybe a reeeeeeealy big stick??? Maybe I’ll drag him along another time … as soon as ski season is over, of course!!! Thank you so much for your lovely comment!!!!!!! Hugzz!!!
Tibby Steedly
Lois, this is wonderful! You’ve taken something commonplace and turned into art. Beautiful!!
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Tibby … what a lovely, lovely comment!!! Thank you so much, sweetie!!!!
Wanda Raines
Great work. Very nice.
Lois Bryan replied
Hello dear Wanda!!! Thank you so much!!!
Trevor Needham
Wonderful shot Lois – really creates (or conveys?) a mood. LOVE the two tone effect of the rusty red and the grey.
Lois Bryan replied
Hi dear Trevor!!! The mood in this was really in need of a boost … I think I at least moved it along, thanks to PS, lol!!!
justlinda
Great work….........
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Linda!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Jason Connolly
Isn’t it amazing how a rusty piece of junk like this can make for such a great shot?..
Keep shooting Lois, this is great work..
Lois Bryan replied
Jason … bless your heart … thank you!!! I think what makes things like this so appealing, at least to me, is the sense of lost opportunity … and the passing of an era. Romantic / historic / tragic … I guess I could go on … So glad you liked it!!!
Jeff Stroud
Great shot, glad you stopped to capture it!
Lois Bryan replied
Jeff, Thanks sooo much!!! I just wish I’d had the nerve to go inside, lol!!!
Bryan Peterson

Lois Bryan replied

scotthartzel
Wow I am impressed with how many people commented on your work,,,way to go…love the building and I am a person who can vision changes and man a little paint would make this place look new…Very interesting. In fact, I once bought a house the neighborhood wanted to tear down and I bought it and fixed it all up, and they could not believe how nice the home turned out. Well, I am rambling, impressed in many areas with you and your work, Scott
Lois Bryan replied
Scott … thank you so much!! What a lovely compliment!!! And I loved your story about fixing up the house … this particular area of PA isn’t toooo depressed, but I can see that at one time, maybe as recently as 50 years ago, it must have been booming. I’ll have to upload some of the images of the surrounding homes and farms for you to get an idea of how sad things can be in some places. Thank you again for your note … nothing I like better than a good conversation about photography!!!
Arrowman
Brill work Lois !
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Colin, you darling!!!! Thank you!!!!
Lorraine Parra...
such an interesting building…....great discovery Lois…....really love the colours and mood of this shot. hugs
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Lorraine!!! Thank you, sweetie … I have many more shots of different angles … but wow … would I have loved to go inside!! Maybe I can drag Dear Hubby off the slopes one of these days and have him ride shotgun for me, while I poke around inside!!! Thanks again!!!!
ej29
Really love the colors..Great work!!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi ej!!!! Thank you so much!!!! Yes, it’s interesting what happens when things are left to themselves, isn’t it??
Wendi Donaldson
Beautiful shot….you’ve done a great job with PP too!!!....well done.
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Wendi!!!! Thank you so much for your lovely compliment … I love to get a shot straight out of the camera that is perfect … but … that doesn’t happen to me very often, lol!!!! But sometimes I still see possibilities … and that’s when i get to play in PS!!! Thanks again, hon!!!!
Corina Daniela...
Great work Lois! It’s very expressive!
Lois Bryan replied
thank you so much, sweetie!!!!
Jane Best
This is beautiful, Lois. Very powerful, rich, and artistic. Well done.
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you very much, Jane … it’s an unusual feeling to drive by areas like these … so much potential … so many people out of work …
jeffrae
Love the colors in this shot…so warm!
Lois Bryan replied
thank you so much!!!!
LYN EVANS
What a brilliant find Lois and the rust blends in perfectly with the surrounding scenery. Fab shot.
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Lynnie … this was one of the shots I took last Sunday when I was fussing about the flat light. I played and played with them in PS hoping to get one good enough to post!! Glad you liked it!!!!
shellbee
very interesting shot, very nice piece of art and history
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Shellbee!!! Thank you so much!!!
Joanne Bradley
Love your composition and treatment on this image and I just happen to really like rust as well…lol! Looks amaing framed in black!
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Joanne!!!! Thank you so much, hon … I really like this kind of thing too … and glad you like the black … it’s amazing to me the difference the frames make!!!
Heloisa Castro
fabulous work
Lois Bryan replied
Many thanks, dear Heloisa!!!!
Bruce Dickson
Turning up the heat on this works wonders. Normally a bit shy on saturated colors but this time the rust looks even better and part of the total mood created.
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Bruce! The Orton technique does wonders for cranking up the colors … and although I toned down the blur considerably, the colors remained. One thing I’m not, is shy about strong color … and I do hope I don’t overdo too often, lol!!! Thank you again for your thoughtful note!! I always love a good conversation about photography!!!
andreisky
Absolutely superb
Lois Bryan replied
thank you!! : ))
