The famous Celcus Library, at Ephesus, Turkey, was built in A.D. 135 by Julius Aquila in memory of his father, Celsus Polemaeanus of Sardis, Roman Senator and Proconsul of the province of Asia.
As I just wrote to Bela, “I wish I could take artistic credit for the perspective on this shot, but truth to tell, I was in the midst of a mass of people so dense if one person sneezed, we’d have all gone over like dominoes!!!! I was desperate to “capture” the magnificence of this structure, so UP was the only way to shoot!!!”

Lois, perfect shot. Love the angle.
Lois Bryan replied
Hii dear Vadim!!!! Thank you so much!!! There’s a story behind the angle … Ephesus was so crowded the day we were there it qualified for the term “bum bumper” .. this is one of two shots that actually didn’t have any people in them!!!! But I thoroughly enjoyed our visit there anyhow!! Glad you like this one!!
Kate Litzow
beautiful shot
Lois Bryan replied
thank you so much!!!!
Alf Caruana

Lois Bryan replied

Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Lynn … yes there really was!!! It was the trip of a lifetime!!!!

BarbaraManis
Hi Lois, love the effects and the angles. Beautiful work!
Lois Bryan replied
Hiii Barbara!!!! Thank you, sweetie!!!!! So glad you like it!!!!
Simon Whittaker
What a stunning shot. I love that hazy finish (gee I hope that was deliberate or I am in big trouble!), the colours, contrast and perspective. Great stuff Gal!
Lois Bryan replied
Simon, you darling, you always make me laugh!!!! You can rest easy, the hazy finish was intentional!!! I had a perfectly clear and crisp version all set to upload when some little devil made me give it the old Orton … and you know … I liked this version better!!! I love the glowy look it creates!!!! Always a delight to see you, sweetie!!! Hugzzz!!!!!!!
mrscboretti
Whoa- that is a wonderful shot!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Christine!! Thank you so much!!!!
hirst
WOW!! What an absolutely amazing place, love the Orton too, well done!
Lois Bryan replied
Hiii Shirley … thank you sooo much .. I have zillions of images from this place … will start uploading a few more in time. I’m a frustrated archaeologist, I’m afraid, lol!!!!! I really, really, really love these kinds of places and the history that goes with!!!!!
flyfish70
That is so beautiful, it’s hard to believe it is still standing after all of this time!!!!!! Very nice capture and I love the angle!!!!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks so much, Ash!! Actually, I don’t think it is, as you say, “still standing after all this time.” This particular site is an ongoing archaeological dig … there are tents and excavations everywhere. Unless I’m way off, the pieces to the library have been very carefully and painstakingly unearthed and re grouped, reconstructed and rebuilt. Actually the library itself is pretty much a shell, but what a magnificent shell!!!!!
Sensiworld
Beautiful shot, great angle !
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Sylvia!!! Thank you, sweetie!!! This is one of my all time favorites … took me a bit to dig it up out of the mothballs, lol!!!
Béla Török
Love the warm colors and the perspective in this image!
Lois Bryan replied
thanks so much, dear Bela!!!! I wish I could take artistic credit for the perspective on this shot, but truth to tell, I was in the midst of a mass of people so dense if one person sneezed, we’d have all gone over like dominoes, lol!!!! I was desperate to “capture” the magnificence of this structure, so UP was the only way to shoot!!!
MarianaEwa
Lovely shot.
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Mariana!!!!! I’m so glad you like this one!!!
Clive
A perfectly stunning capture Lois, so much detail showing, excellent work once again my friend, and the narration, spot on xx
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, bless your heart, Clive … yes, the detail was a very important part of my decision to go with Orton or not … I didn’t want to lose ANY of the magnificent stone work shown here!!!! I added a bit more to the narration … boy, I’m yappy sometimes, LOL!!! Hugzzz!!!
melant1017
Very nice :)
-Antonio
Lois Bryan replied
Antonio, how good of you to visit!!! Thank you!!!!
Agnes McGuinness
A superb capture, Lois. And your Orton effect is beautiful. Agnes:)))
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiii Agnes, dear!!!! Thank you so much … I’m glad you liked the Orton on this one … I was all set with a lovely, crispy clear image, straight from the camera, but I tried the Orton and couldn’t resist the warm glow it gives!!! Thank you again!!!
LYN EVANS
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!! Lois, this is a cracking shot. Excellent composition, absolutely beautiful.
Lois Bryan replied
Hiiiiii Lynnie!!!!! Thank you, thank you, hon!!!! I’ve had a few comments on the perspective and composition, so I added a bit to the description up top … give it a read if you have a sec … I really should learn to keep my mouth, er, fingers, shut I guess … everyone would have much more respect for me as an “artist” I think!!! HUGZZZZZ!!!
LudaNayvelt
wonderful architecture ans awesome shot, Lois
Lois Bryan replied
Hello, Luda, darling!!!!! Thank you sooo much!!! Sooo glad you like this one … it’s one of my all-time favorite images!!!!
Jared D White
Awesome! Love the perspective, love the Orton, love the subject! great shot
Lois Bryan replied
Jared, thank you so much … having just visited your works, I’m soooo honored that you like this one!!! It’s such a magical place!! As to the perspective, I’ve had a few lovely comments, so, decided to add a bit of narrative up top to explain myself. When will I learn to keep quiet??? LOL!!
Susan Grissom
Beautifully shot…....... great angle
Lois Bryan replied
Hello Susan!!! Thank you soooo much!!! I’m so honored!!! But don’t give me too much encouragement … I’ve got a million of these stashed away on cds and external hard-drives … I’ll swamp your poor group if given half a chance, lol!!!! Seriously, thank you again … and I DO appreciate the encouragement so much!!! Best regards … Lois
Lois Bryan
Jared D White
“When will I learn to keep quiet???”
Hopefully never!
The pictures I like most usually have a long history, technique explaination, or story/poem with them.
I need to write more with mine!
Lois Bryan replied
Well, truth be told, I’m a writer first and foremost … so keeping my fingers quiet isn’t the easiest thing, lol. By the way, there’s a great group here called “Image Writing” that encourages exactly that … if / when you decide to add more, give them a look-see!!! Thanks again … nothing I like more than a bit of photography chat!!!
LYN EVANS
LOL. I STILL think its brilliant.
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, thank you sweetie!!!!! You’re my best cheerleader!!!! Hugzzz!!!
Antanas
Perfect angle, very good composition
Lois Bryan replied

OH MY … wiping giggle tears away … !!!!!
LudaNayvelt
I can see why. I actually like seen this yesterday, but was to sleepy already.
Lois Bryan replied
lol … bless your heart … I’ve done that … it gets late, I’m enjoying everyone’s images, but I know if I try to type anything, chances are, it won’t even make sense!!!!! Have a great weekend, sweetie … hugzzzz!!!!!
sigfusson
My Dear Lois – what a fantastic capture this is. The Orton Effect simply makes this shine, and the detail is outstanding. Love, love, love this shot. A new fav. for me. Cheers, S.
Lois Bryan replied
Darling Sandra!!!! Thank you sooo much for your lovely comment!!!! Yes, the Orton did quite a number on this baby, I think, too!!! I had the nice, freshly pressed, crisp version all set to go, but just wondered what Orton would do with it. I liked the glow it created, too!!!! Thank you thank you!!!!!
Yool
Amazing caputer my friend it is so beautyful !!!!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Yool!! Your own work is sooooo amazing!!! I’m honored that you like this one!!!! Thank you!!!!
Gary L. Suddath
beautiful shot and excellent perspective
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Gary!!!!! It’s one of my favorites!!! So glad you like it!!!
Pamela B
Love the angle the and the architecture!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Pamela!!! Yes, the architectural details of these structures just completely blows my mind!!!! I was so lucky to be able to see so many fabulous things when I was in the Mediterranean!!!! So glad you like it, too!!!!
Joanne Bradley
Excellent point of view! The architecture is stunning against the blue sky! That is what us photographers have to do, take the best position possible and sometimes it works out really well, like in this instance!
Lois Bryan replied
hiiii Joanne!!!! That’s so true!!!!! It really was incredibly crowded!!! I’ve seen other pictures of Ephesus … and wondered … where did all the people go??? But … it all worked out!!! I’m so glad you like this one, hon!!!!! Hugzz!!!
KcranmerArt
Excellent capture Lois!!! xoxo
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Kelly!!! Thank you so so so much!!! coming from someone as talented as yourself, I’m truly honored!!!!!
terezadelpilar
SO WONDERFUL LOIS! You are a great Architectural Photographer!
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Tereza, my love!!! You know the old saying, Timing Is Everything … IF ONLY I’d known then what I know now … if only I’d had a decent camera then … oh well … maybe someday I’ll get to go back to your magnificent corner of the world … ahhhhh … the Mediterranean!!!! My heart is still there!!! To be a real architectural photographer … THAT would be a dream come true!!! Clever Tereza … you’ve read my heart!!!!!
shakey
Great angle Lois,well captured.
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Paul, thank you so much!!! I’ve had a chance to visit your portfolio … and I’m so honored with your visit and lovely and encouraging comment!! Thank you again!!
Archetipo
Wonderful shot Lois!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Luca, you darling!!! Thank you so much!!!! It’s an old favorite!!! So glad you liked it!!!
danapace
gorgeous spectacle! The colours are just perfect!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Dana!!! We were incredibly lucky with the weather on this particular trip … gorgeous blue skies, little white puffy clouds … everything you could wish for!!!!
Archetipo
did you apply the orton effect on it? It’s wonderful!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Luca, yes I did … I had the nice crisp version all set to go, but at the last minute I just wondered what Orton would do … and it just made everything GLOW!!! Sometimes I can’t make up my mind which I like best, but in this case there was no argument. The Orton is very slight, so all the detail is still there. Thanks, hon … very glad you liked it!! You know how I respect your photographic opinions!!
Archetipo
Thanks Lois you’re very kind to me! And we both know that the Orton effect kicks 4$$ only when applied on great shots (as in this case)!!! I saw this photo 3 times today and I still go “WOW!” lol! kiss hun.
Lois Bryan replied
You sweetheart!!!! Thank you!!!!! I’ll have to dig up more of my Mediterranean shots … it was the trip of a lifetime and the first baby steps in my interest in photography.
shanemcgowan
tis an excellent shot!!! well done lois :))
Lois Bryan replied
Shane, I’m so glad you like it!!!!
rodsfotos
Just trying to imagine you in the crowds with camera raised to get a shot of this ancient architectural gem Lois, well your peseverance paid dividends and the perspective works well intentionally or enforced by the crowds,
Regards, Rod.
Lois Bryan replied
... I’m laughing … I actually have a shot of me in front of the library … AMONG the kazillion people!! I’ll have to dig it up and post it here … you’ll laugh!!!! I’ll let you know when I do!!
Clark Thompson
I think “up” was most definitely the way to go… It elongates the columns which works out very, very well here.
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you, Clark!!!! As my daddy used to say, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than smart!!!! Hugzzz!!!
Mark Tisdale
Exquisite light!
clarkey
Sometimes, the “perfect” shot comes from circumstances beyond our control. This shot IS just perfect. The Orton Effect has done a wonderful job of making it come alive for me. Beautifully done.
Lois Bryan replied
It’s so true that circumstance can sometimes be our friend!!! I’m glad you like the strong Orton on this one, I thought it worked well, too!!! Thank you so much for your lovely visit!!
Jayca
It’s amazing! Maybe there was a reason you could only shoot UP! :) It’s perfect!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you!!! I think you’re right about that … I remember when I saw the shot in the computer for the first time … what a nice surprise, lol!!!!! Ya just never know!!!
Prasad
Fantastic presentation!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, dear Prasad!!!! I’m so glad you enjoyed this one!!!
