Image taken with the Nikon D40x, using the 18-135mm lens. Used the tripod, shutter speed 6, aperture f/22, exposure -.67, iso 800. No flash.

Of everything I’ve done, this is by far my favorite image (well, actually, there IZ one other … ). This was created for a “challenge” at another photo site … and came in second place out of … well, a bunch … but that’s not why it’s my favorite. This was done not long after I got my Nikon D40x … which I realize isn’t a wildly sophisticated camera, but which was a giant leap forward to me after my little Olympus C-5000 zoom. There were many new features on the Nikon that I was hopelessly confused about, but I was very fortunate to have a dear friend, AndreiSky, who kindly helped me understand the mysteries of the aperture. The set up for this image was an adventure in flashlights, darkness, kitchen stools, sofa pillows and the dreaded tripod. Not to mention my beautiful antique mahjong set … for which I finally found a use since I have no idea how to play mahjong!! So that’s it!! My masterpiece!! Hope you like it!!!

Wonderful image Lois, which I think I have seen before somewhere! Mahjong deja vu! :) Tony

  • Lois Bryan replied

Yes, this was my moment in the spotlight … my 15 minutes of fame, remember??? My big second place in the numbers challenge??? I STILL love this one!!!! Glad you do too!!!!

Great shadows and light here. Gives the game board/pieces a real sense of history. Few things are as ancient as the game of Mahjong. Cheers, S.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi sweetie!! Glad you like this one … this was my first serious encounter with apertures and tripods and manipulating light. It’s also one of my personal favs!! Thanks, hon!!!!

  • eXposure

    eXposure

    wonderful capture …
can remember owning a set as children and never quite understanding it

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Wendy!!! I was addicted to online Mahjong Solitaire a few years back and when I saw this set in a local antique store I was thrilled to pieces. What a laughable horror to discover the real game is nothing like the online version … and no one to teach me or to play with!!! I probably got my money’s worth with the photographing of it, but I still have dreams of long afternoons with The Joy Luck Club!!

I love this, has a feeling of age to it almost. I love the colours and the shade. Impressive for one of you first encounters with apertures and tripods and all that lark. I am moving soon, can’t wait to set up my own mini studio, where I am now just doesn’t cater for it as much as I would like!

  • Lois Bryan replied

thank you … you have no idea the number of shots I took before I got to this particular composition!!! Lotza throw-aways!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thanks Kimberly … yes, and if only I could find someone to teach it to me!!! I imagine it’s pretty complicated. When I found the set in an antique store I was so thrilled!!! The pieces are all made of bone and bamboo … and are so wonderfully soft to the touch!!! thanks again for your note!!

Ah ah ah addiction.. humm. I think you are right!!
Well, i’ll be playing tonight with my friends, we usually start with a good meal and chat, and then we play :))
Humm, i hesitate with your incredibly colourful shots of butterflies… they are all my favorite to be honest, can’t choose!!:))))

  • Lois Bryan replied

What a lovely, fun evening you and your friends must have!!! I think my love affair with mahjong started with Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club ... one of my favorite authors. Then I found mahjong solitaire online and lost countless hours messing with that. To upgrade myself to playing the real game with real human beings would be such a treat!!! ... sigh … maybe one of these days!!!! So glad you like the butterfly shots, too … they were my playmates every morning and evening all summer long!!!

  • Cvail73

    Cvail73

Ah? I’ll have to check this book out!!

  • Jenny Brice

    Jenny Brice

This is an outstanding photo Lois. It is beautifully clear and the lighting is lovely. My grandmother had an ivory Mahjong set and I can remembr playing a simplified version of the game when I was a child. I adored it and was very envious when my much older cousin was given the set after my grandmother died!!!
Good luck in the Challenge. You have my vote!!! :-)

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Jenny!!! Thank you so so much for your lovely note!! You know, isn’t that one of the greatest things about our photography … when it brings up a memory for the viewer!!! So cool!!! I have to tell you that mahjong … the online version … got me through a very, very difficult time in my life. When I saw this set in a local antique store, I couldn’t resist it. I only wish I could find some friends who know the game and could teach me, lol!!! Thank you again for your lovely note!!!! I so appreciate it!!!!!

This is just a winning photograph, Lois, there is no doubt about it. My wife and my daughter-in-aw are both big mahjong players… perhaps they can get you started. I’ll warn you, though, it is a very prolonged and addictive game. Congratulations on the big Challenge win!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiiiiii Clark!!!!! Thank you … thank you so much!!!! Mahjong is addicting??? Oh … uhoh … no … no … if I get hooked on something else, my poor hubby will clobber me!!! Thanks again for your note on this shot, Clark … in all seriousness, I think still life images are my favorites. I love thinking up the concept, then playing with the compositions. And there’s just so much more control than there is with butterflies … even landscapes. I really do want to do more. Have a few great concepts in my head that I want to put into play before long. Your kind comment here has motivated me!!!!!

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Jeeze, is there any subject you won’t tackle with sheer eloquence?
There is so much to feast on here…
Think the first thing that struck me was the intensity of your complimentary colors… the subtle nuances of your orange and blue hues is stunning.
But I think the most striking thing is the way you used the strong diagonals to carry us through those amazing and mysterious strokes and patterns, with the depth you created from your perfectly balanced oblique lighting.
But the killer is that where another might have been satisfied with that (also love that your composition delves into that black negative space on the right like falling off a cliff into infinity!), you finish off by adding those seemingly random but precisely placed dice to complete the mystery… who was playing? Who won?? What were the stakes??? And by the way, to place objects to make thepm appear random is an art in itself…
Lady, this is a masterpiece in my eyes and it’s going straight into my favs with a bang!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Ahhhhhh Billy!!!!!! To say you have me blushing is a serious understatement!!!! How I wish I could sit here with a smug smile on my face, nodding sagely and writing back to you “Billy .. you understand me … you understood all my motives for the colors, the light, the shadows and the composition in this piece!!!!!” But … oh … much as I’d love to, I cannot tell a lie!!!! This image is the culmination of about 3 days of shoots … arranging and shooting … rearranging … and shooting. I nearly gave up twice … nothing worked!!!!! Nothing looked right!!! This image is … truly .. the very last snap I took!!!!! (My back hurts just thinking about it!!!) But HOW I love reading your interpretation!!!!!! As to the numbers on the dice … well, actually they DO have a significance!!! How perceptive of you to wonder!!!!! Billy, thanks so much … you’ve made my day!!!!

  • Marjorie Wallace

    Marjorie Wallace

Congratulations, Lois on your feature today in The Collectors Corner. I have long thought this was a wonderful capture with thoughtful arrangement and very nice lighting. It is one that I have come back to time and again to admire. I have long wanted to join a Mah Jong Group and learn how to play this very intriguing game. My first real job was in this Chinese Restaurant for friends of a friend. They would play Mah Jong until the wee hours of the morning and I can still hear the clacking of the tiles in my head. You have created an outstanding image here and I am proud to feature it. Warm wishes, Marjie

  • Lois Bryan replied

i really like how you’ve arranged this in terms of how the subject is displayed and also your composition and tones. you really do have a fantastic style. i like that there’s such thought put into obtaining the perfect variation of a shot – it’s something i strive for in my own work.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Oh, honey, there’s NO comparison between your work and mine … I’m still pretty far down on the old learning curve … but bless you for saying there might be. Still floundering around, trying new things and enjoying them all!!! I’m really glad you found this one, though … it took me days to get the composition to this stage … and pages of hopeless attempts … but what fun!!! Thank you … you’ve made my day with your visit and kind note!!!!!!

What a stunning Mahjong set!! Looks really old Lois.
Love what you’ve done with image…...layout, camera settings, composition, light and shadow.

After reading your many comments, I cannot believe that I’m the only one who knows how to play it, although haven’t done so for about ten years. Took us ages to try and decipher the book and work out the points scoring system. I still remember our sessions, some which went long into the night and usually ended with my sister stomping down the stairs and shouting at us to stop clinking those f*ing tiles!!!
Its a bit like gin rummy. I’ve seen the chinese play it and wow…..speed!!!

Great work Lois and keep hold of that set….......unless someone offers you lots of money for it!! :o)

... I’m laughing out loud, here!!! Wow .. how old were you when you learned to play?? Honestly, until I read Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club I thought mahjong was some kind of candy!! Then i discovered the online solitaire and went crazy!!! I’ve tried to learn the real game … there was an online tutorial … but … wow … complicated … and no one to play with. And yes, I’ve heard it’s like gin rummy. What fun to play with real humans!!! The set itself is glorious. Soooo smooth to the touch you just know whoever had it before me loved it and played it a lot. Thanks so much for visiting and for your note!!! I appreciate it!!!
