Have you joined the unemployment line?
So far my job is safe. But neither of my sons have had any work since last November.
It is seriously depressing, and the feeling of this being out of my control makes it very frustrating.
I can only imagine how others will deal with this.
I lost my job in 1998 and was out of work for 2 years. During that time I lost everything, and I am still repaying some of the debt.
All I can sa…
Thanks, Red Bubblers raised money for anti-whaling
It is topical at present, but by no coincidence, that I give you wonderful folk feedback from my fundraising here.
As you know, the sales of everything here are donated, and matched dollar for dollar by me to many causes.
Last week I managed to send $300 to a number of organisations including the Sea Shepherd – money which was raised from you kind folk buying my tshirts.

Don't buy a new camera just yet
There is a hell of a lot of excitement going on over the Nikon D90, Canon 50D, and the Canon 5D MkII.
Out of all of them, the Nikon is the best buy. In the US you can get the body only for under $1000 while the Canon is much more expensive, and with less features.
The beauty of the Nikon is the HD video options. Lots of people are now selling stock videos and making a good buck.

Will start adding more shirts soon
I have a stack of new designs that I will eventually load.
Finally after months of computer crashes, I managed to get a new PC. So hopefully I can add some new stuff real soon.
Thanks to everyone for their support.
2 computer gurus in the family, but desktop still broke
You would think with a 16 and 18 yo, one of whom is studying IT, my computers (that they use and consider me a pain when I want in) would be well maintained and first class.
I mean, “Dad, this graphic card is crap, so you need this new one”, and “Dad, you need to boost your internet connection”. AND of course I do.
So now, my main PC simply will not turn on. It has thousands of my photos …
My cheap and nasty lighting set up
I have had a few mails from folks wanting to know about the lighting I use for stock.
Well, my studio stuff is hopefully only a few months away. But meanwhile I have been putting up with this rig.
Basically, the main lights are cheap construction lights. The twin 500w halogens came from Bunnings (Home Depot I guess in the USA) for $25. I have a support desk lamp to iron out any shadows.

Heads up, selling a Canon 300D and a Nikon D1
Not just yet, I have them in getting cleaned. And waiting for a replacement battery charger from the USA.
The 300D rebel was my staple camera for so long. It cost me $2000 back in the bad old days when stuff was so expensive. I am hoping for around $400. It has made me so much money in stock photography.
The Nikon D1 is just right for any photography student. It is a full professional dig…
My nifty 50 arrived
Probably the best value for money Canon offers is the 50mm f1.8II.
I finally bought one for $80 and I have never been so pleased with a purchase.
Well it feels light, plastic and cheap. But the images are sharp. And, as you can imagine, the depth of field is amazing.
I stuck my old 30D on the Av setting and played with settings from 1.8 through to 20 and each time I got a great shot. ...
3 things every photographer should do
Regardless of whether you are in this for the money, or the love of photography, there are 3 “must dos” every photographer should do.
1. Join a camera/photography club. Hopefully there is one in your area. The clubs are full of people with so much experience to share, and some clubs have classes in everything from composition to lighting. Some also have equipment like studio lighting that yo…
What stock photos are selling at the moment?
The USA is the biggest consumer of stock photography by far. Right now, the economy is feeling the pinch of a credit squeeze, and high oil prices.
And while that all means that budgets allocated for marketing will probably diminish, it also means those with their thinking caps on will probably survive, and do pretty good.
Your normal old stock photo of a smiling family in front of a lap t…
