My Strong & Proud Series continues from 2009 into 2010. This part of the series has been taken at the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin 38th Annual Pow Wow.

I am a proud member of the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin and this year our pow wow was host to dancers from twenty six tribes throughout Indian Country.

Land, language, and our way of life all suffered loss as Europeans claimed the continent we know as North America as their own. Despite an organized effort of genocide, the Oneida Tribe and hundreds of other tribes have been able to work through such adversity.

Many years have passed since my forefathers had to contend with losing nearly all they had. One thing that could not be taken away was the drive to survive.

I never met my great grandfather but I am proud of his determination and driving spirit. His grandfather likely experienced life as all Indian tribes once knew it to be.

Much has changed over all those years and yet still Indians from tribes across this country still stand strong, proud, and determined to progress.

I hope you enjoy the additions to this series. I am very pleased to say that the Strong & Proud Series is amongst my most viewed work at all the web site I post.

Thank you all in advance for your support of my work.

Another goodie! This one might be my fav from the series so far, actually :)

  • Thank you. It is one of my favs as well. She just happened to catch my eye. There were many dancers and lots of activity. This shot was taken during the Grand Entry, the arena was full of dancers.

    You’re welcome!
It is odd, isn’t it? Shots “we” think “people” will like… just dwell in silence.. while others that we think is just ok… soar…
Anyway… this is stunning Scott!!! :))))))

  • I know exactly what you mean. Thank you.

Stunning! A great shot. And very good use of selective coloring. It is like their is a rebirth from the old. Color out of black and white.

  • Thank you for noticing such detail. I tried to process the BW background to look like an old photo, using various techniques and textures. I wanted this beautiful woman to be seen as a modern woman yet respectful of old ways.

    Thank you. :-)

I really shouldn’t type just before leaving work…lol…… Just reading my comment again and I left out half of what I wanted to say : What I like about the color, is that is it giving the work hope for the future. The black and white background is the old, bad past and out of it is emerging the most beautiful being. Even though the past was dull and “bad”, she brings such beauty and hope for the future.

  • Bingo!!!

Thanks so much for your support of my work.
