With wind chills slightly below zero degrees fahrenheit this Mexican Wolf at the Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Illinois walked around like it was just another day. I of course had mulitple layers, boots, hand wamers, long underwear, and still had to ocassionally seek shelter from the cold.

*The Mexican Wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf. It is native to North America, where it is the rarest and most genetically distinct subspecies.

Until recent times, the Mexican Wolf ranged the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts from central Mexico to western Texas, southern New Mexico, and central Arizona. By the turn of the 20th century, reduction of natural prey like deer and elk caused many wolves to begin attacking domestic livestock, which led to intensive efforts by government agencies and individuals to eradicate the Mexican Wolf.

Today, an estimated 300 Mexican Wolves survive in 49 facilities in the United States and Mexico. This photo was taken at the Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Illinois.

Beautiful portrait of this lovely animal Scott. Love the B&W treatment.

  • Thank you very much for the comment and fav.

I did a little light rendering here. I wanted the focus to be his awesome face yet still faintly see the other details to the scene.

I have made two trips to the Brookfield Zoo and been realy happy each time. The cold weather keeps them on the move.

Me on the other hand. I think I might have lost feeling forever in my shooting fingers. Only kidding of course.

    Nie work here, good job

  • Two trips to Brookfield and very happy each time. I think I came out of there with about 10 really nice shots.

The Walkstool was a back saver!!! I set up with the wind and sun to my back. It was really not all that cold until I took my fingers out of my gloves to shoot.

Once the wolves were up and active I had to keep my fingers out of the gloves constantly. I always had to be ready.

The other shot I posted Space Invader was taken when my hand were so cold they were starting to hurt.

I could tell by the body language something was about to go down. I just did not know when.

The outburst lasted probably 3 seconds. Lucky for me I had enough feeling in my finger to push the trigger. Man, was I hoping it turned out. I am stinking glad it did.
