Whatcha Packin?

I think it is fun to learn about what others are using for photography equipment. One can get some really great shots from point & shoot digitals. It is interesting to see what kind of lenses people have and prefer. What kind of camera body is being used. It can even be interesting to see what other people use to carry and protect their gear.

It gives us a chance to ask questions about each others gear and may help in our future purchase research.

So….Whathca Packin???

Dont be afraid that you have a Sony. If the images are good and you are pleased that is all that matters. If you still decide to change. Maybe something or someone here can help you. You know you can ask me anytime.

    Sometimes I wish I had another body…camera that is…well…now that I think about it…LOL…anyway.

Sometimes I wish I would have kept my Canon AE1 film camera. But at the same time, selling it helped me purchase some of my current equipment.

I do know that if I go to Africa again, I will probably pick up a decent point and shoot. When driving on the roads, if you can all them that, it was too hard to have my DSLR ready. A little point and shoot would be nice.

I don’t have it anymore, but my favorite image of the camoflaged treefrog was taken with a simple Nikon Coolpix point and shoot 3200. That little point and shoot had quality pixels, you could blow up one of those to 11×14 and never miss a beat.

Well you should get a chance to talk to many people from here. Although Canon is dominating this thread….YES!!...LOL….seriously now…

  • Scott Denny

Scott Denny in reply to WayoftheWarrior’s comment, 6 months ago

My brother Jack shoots with Nikon. He is looking at either the Sigma or Tamron 18-200mm. I know he would appreciate some input as to how that lens works for you. Just tell him I sent ya his way.

How do you like the Sigma 170-500mm? I am tossed between it and Tamrons big 500mm zoom. I have read a number of reviews and the Tamron seems to get better reviews. Sometimes that stuff does not matter.

  • Scott Denny

Scott Denny in reply to EvaMcDermott’s comment, 6 months ago

That is a very nice assortment of lenses. I have the f4 version of the 70-200mm and I love it. Have you seen how many Canon users here so far??? :-)

  • Scott Denny

Scott Denny in reply to Christopher Ewing’s comment, 6 months ago

How do you like that Tamron 28-75mm? I love mine. Very crisp, fast focus and built solid. I have not used it nearly as much as my 70-200mm lately. Been doing a lot of wildlife lately. With nice weather around the corner landscape are on my agenda and excited to use the Tamron.

    Comment for Mia…

Mia, Sony make the sensors for most of the nikon range and their new a700 gets some great reviews…although it might be an idea to buy better lenses before upgrading the camera as that can make all the difference in the world to image quality…you can still find some quality minolta glass on ebay for the right price yet…:)

Only thing I find bad about the a100 is the noise at high iso’s is quite bad…that and it isn’t badged Minolta…lol

Looks like you have a nice assortment of gear. Yes, this is an expensive hobby. I am hoping to make a little money to offset some of the expenses by shooting High School portraits and family portraits.

I purchased the studio equipment to start doing portraits and making a little on the side. Just have to get the studio in working condition.

  • Scott Denny

Scott Denny in reply to Andrea Ward’s comment, 6 months ago

    Andrea,

Looks like to me you have some decent focal lengths covered. Sometimes you dont need much. In time you will increase your level of gear. Doing this is not cheap but it sure is fun…eh?

  • Scott Denny

Scott Denny in reply to shotzbyjay’s comment, 6 months ago

You have a nice set up. How much do you actually use your 50mm? I noticed that several people have a 50mm. I have thought of getting one for the speed of it, but I really dont shoot 50mm that much.

  • Michael Jordan

    Michael Jordan, 6 months ago

Scott the 50mm with the crop factor makes a nice sharp portrait lens of about 75mm allowing you to get close without standing on top of them and as they are normally fast you don’t need to use flash as often either…I also use mine with extension tubes for macro.

  • Scott Denny

Scott Denny in reply to Michael Jordan’s comment, 6 months ago

Thats a good thing to consider. I planned on using my Tamron 28-75mm for portraits, but a 50mm would be a little faster. I may have to pick one up.

I dont have extension tubes yet. Macro photography has not got me excited yet. I love looking at it, just no desire to do it yer.

Thanks for the feedback. I will probably look into a 50mm. It is a great idea for outdoor portraits.

  • Michael Jordan

    Michael Jordan, 6 months ago

As its a prime lens it would normally be a lot sharper than a zoom too Scott. Mines like a razor from about F4 on and only slightly less sharp wide open…:)

  • shotzbyjay

    shotzbyjay, 6 months ago

Scott, I don’t use the 50mm a lot, it’s what I use when the light’s too low to use the others. I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of it, for $70 it’s well worth having for the low light ability. I don’t normally do portraits, but it should be a fine lens for that. Like Michael said, it would be the same as an 80mm with my 1.6 crop factor, or 75mm on a 1.5. And it is very sharp.
