America in 1812 Series - Miami Tribe

Mississinewa 1812

Each year my father (Tim Denny) and I take a “photography trip”. Most commonly we go late in the year for Fall colors. This year we spent a week in Indiana, taking photos at a re-enactment and covered bridges of Parke County.

The Battle of the Mississinewa, also known as Mississineway, was an expedition ordered by William Henry Harrison against Miami Indian villages in response to the attacks on Fort Wayne and Fort Harrison in the Indiana Territory. The battle is significant as the first American victory in the War of 1812. The site is near the city of Marion, Indiana.

Mississinewa 1812 is not a re-enactment of the battle. It is a period re-enactment that captures the lifestyles and military living in the period 1812. If you ever get a chance I totally recommend the event. Trully enjoyable.

Over the next several weeks I will be posting images taken at Mississinewa 1812 along with covered bridges from Parke County, Indiana.

Tell me who can say if it is an American Indian with half his face painted or a white man with half his face painted!
Skin colour really is only the top layer of skin deep!

This is a very good historically re-enacted photograph! Not only the subject in costume but how you have taken him and presented the shot! We could believe we were actually there in 1812!
    Bravo! ♥

  • Scott Denny replied

This guy was of Native descent. The actual colors on his face were yellow and green.

I really appreciate your comment about the processing. I tried hard to create an image that looks like it might be from the history books. I only wish this guy had more native blood. I am 1/4 Oneida Indian. In some ways I look native…other ways…not so much.

    Thanks again.

WOnderful image Scott. He look quite fierce.

  • Scott Denny replied

This guy took his reenacting very serious. Apparently he has been participating in the event for several years and often a crow favorite.

Very nice Scott…being native myself… The Photo is excellant!!! have family members that go to Pow-Wows and looks very much like your photo…Excellant! Nice capture…

  • Scott Denny replied

This guy is actually native. Several of the native reenactors were not native. I was a little disappointed but also impressed to know that there are some non-native people that have a genuine passion to not let people forget native people are a huge part of the US history.

It is too bad the US government does not acknowedge that more. Nothing against other races but to live in the USA and know there is Black History Month and Latino American Month is a little disappointing consider we the indigenous people of this land have to make up our own holidays and acknowledgements.

With out the Native people of this land there would be no USA. I am Oneida. The Oneida have fought along side the USA in every single war the US has been involved in. Including the wars that helped create the country.

    Thanks for your genuine feedback.

Fav’d this yesterday because I didn’t want to lose it, just had time for a quick look.
I must tell you that I think you made an amazing portrait and that with your texture/effect work it looks like it could be one of the earliest captured photographs of the American Indian, truly a wonderful job.

i think you’ve done a splendid job of presenting this as an actual vintage piece of history. so good in fact without the description people might think you lifted this piece out a book. awesome work.

  • Scott Denny replied 8 days ago

    Wow…that is a great comment!

Each time I processing a photo I try and think how I can enhance the thoughts I feel when I see the image.

I dont always know how I will process a photo while I take it. On the other hand there are times when I have a distinct idea in mind when I take the shot. This was not one of those times.
