i thought tiger swallowtail, but their wings seperate, whereas the wings on your pic appear joined? also, these have red patches, tiger swallowtails do not! xxxx whos flirting now?lol

This is a fabulous photo of Swallowtails. There are 34 species of Swallowtail in North America, of which there are 4 species of Tiger Swallowtail. This looks to be the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail or possibly the Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail, they are very similar. It rather depends in which US State you live, (let me know, it has disappeared from your profile). As far as I can tell, the Appalachian only appears in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The orange spots signify that they are both males as the females don’t have any.

There are a lot of variations of the same species in the butterfly world. Just a shift of 25 miles might be enough to show a distinct variation between exactly the same species.
