    IF you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

    If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    ’ Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,
    if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
    And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

  • I’m no wordsmith like the fab Rickster1, I waffle far too much! But Rudyard Kiplings poem has been going around in my head for a few days and I felt my husband’s granddad’s old fob watch made for a suitable image to go with the poem.

    Dedicated to a dear friend x

    Awesome vintage. Great work. Loving the new style.

  • thank you Paul, everytime I walked past that watch I knew I was going to have to photograph it. So many things going on at the moment, that poem just seemed to fit nicely :)

    LOVE this lovely old timepiece Lissy! The combination of the wonderfully nostalgic image, John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ and Rudyard Kiplings poem …You have created a wonderful work of which anyone would be proud to receive as a dedication to them! ♥

  • thank you Carol, so many things going on in my head at the moment, it all seemed to come together nicely for a change x

    A poignant choice of words and image Lissy, you inspired me to drag out my old pocket watch and gold fob chain just for a look. “If” really is a great poem and Imagine is an anthem :)

  • cheers Matt, and the watch still works too! It’s really quite therapeutic actually winding an old timepiece up rather than leave it all to modern battery power, although the ticking can be deafening after a while!
    Quite poignant that small but solid things can sometimes be the loudest! ;-)

    Really well done, Sarah… the words and image combo are just perfect. The tones you have achieved in this image work well as they, of course, give it that nostalgic feeling which is very appropriate. I like the subtle blur on the chain too and the precise focus on the time-piece itself….. Excellent photography!

  • thank you Kat, something just caught in my head with this piece everytime I walked past it, and combined with the words of Rudyard Kipling swirling round my brain the last few days I just had to put them together. Probably one of the fastest pieces I’ve ever produced!
