The “Angel of Victory” statue which sits outside Vancouver’s Waterfront Station is a Vancouver icon. The statue, sculpted by Coeur de Lion MacCarthy in 1921, was commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway to commemorate the 1,100 CPR employees who lost their lives in the First World War.

What I think is so special about this piece is that the sad expression on the angel’s face as she gazes on the dead soldier seems less to communicate victory as to communicate sadness at the needless waste of life. When will we figure it out and all get along?

It was raining the day I shot this and if you view it closely you can see the water drops on the soldiers face as though the angel was crying.

Layered with another image of mine with poppies.
