yellow velvet ribbon with a brass bell

I’m going to buy a brass bell
not one of those schoolyard types
a little one
like you’d hang around a cat’s neck

I’m going to unthread the yellow velvet ribbon
from the old quilt that has lived for many years on the third shelf of my mother’s special cupboard
I’ll iron it nice and straight

It has to be yellow
I won’t play oak tree
I’ll be a river reed
swaying with a comforting breeze, standing upright after every windy thrashing

I’ll think about offering up the yellow velvet ribbon
in a purge and burning ceremony
its tug to be worn will win out
I’ll pretend my fingers are a knitting nancy and twist its yellow velvet belief in me around each

When satisfied I’ll let out a sweet sigh toward the window pane
I’ll write my name in the condensation
through each letter a light will blaze, warming my face
I’ll think about going to sea, and then laugh till I cry remembering I don’t have sea legs

The red baron will fly again; spreading propaganda flyers
don’t wear a yellow velvet ribbon with a threaded brass bell
I’ll spend years collecting each one
on a bonfire built out of a sea shanty, I’ll burn every damn one

A needle will play a song of directions
beneath a pile of dirt I’ll find a crown
embossed with “how sweet to find that which was once lost”
I’ll want to sing when the sun settles, I never will

Inside a brown paper bag a brass bell silently waits
its time has not been long my thoughts have flowed in quick succession
I’ll take the crisply ironed yellow velvet ribbon and thread it through the little brass hoop
making a simple knot at the ends, the length perfectly measured to fit my neck

In the quiet of night
you might hear its jingle
in the loudness of daylight
I’ll be stealth like a cat on a cool tin roof; silent

it might mean nothing
it might mean something
I could be a lion baring my teeth
or the sweetest angel in the pack

you can be sure of only one thing
I’ll be the one wearing a yellow velvet ribbon with a brass bell
