Substantial Sustenance
Substantial Sustenance belongs to the following groups:
Core [C.O.R.E], Graphic Scratch and Verses DarkHe places a chopping block and knife
on the cedar kitchen bench
places his heart upon it
and slices into juliette strips
into a mortar and pestle
he drops his crying eyes
pulverising into tear scented powder
to the right of the bench
a mincer is screwed tightly
with a last thought, he lets go of his brain
turns the handle till the mincer drains
He places a mixing bowl
on the cedar kitchen bench
into which he adds
juliette strips
tear scented powder
minced brain
a cup of ruby blood
with two fingers
he dips into each crevice and crease
adding a spoon of pheromones
with a razor he slices the skin from his wrists
dropping into the mix
He places a baking tray
on the cedar kitchen bench
rubbing his scalp with his thumb
he greases the tray, bottom first then the sides
mixing with the memory of days lost or left or not known
dipping a finger to taste he notes a sense of self pleasure
into a greased tray, his mix senses a righteous indignation
in the backyard a pit has been prepared with coals
a wind blows a constant steam of heat
he places the tray deep within the coals
Six days earlier
Six invitations had been posted
To the ones that had
Given the eye
Stolen his heart
Used his mind
But never tasted him
Upon six golden plates
Each engraved with a name
The delicacy that was missed
Is served tonight

Are you writing stage scenes in your head?
Incredible expression!
Is this from an ancient almanac, or are “you “an ancient messenger?
You have aroused something deep inside, I’m hungry!
Jessica Tremp

The extended metaphor and sometimes gruesome imagery got my adrenaline going like nothing else! A beautiful summary of true betrayal.
bellmusker
How curious and magical this is…but undoubtedly macabre, with a realm of darkness at its core, to me at least. It brings to mind images of alchemy…....now I’m somewhat alarmed to go walking by the creek with you! I would like to read more of this…
Kym Breeze
Wow Lisa this is amazing…blew my mind reading this one, as I get a clear visual of the events….Now that would make an interesting painting…..mmmmmm
Powerful stuff, and yes agree with demon, maybe you should walk home more often…..hugs xoxoxo

Peter Evans
OMG….just as well I’m reading this (over and over) with a glass of red. I had to throw a full glass back to settle my nerves.
This is excellent, what’s even more amazing is how easy for me it was to trip into the character.
Brb another red is needed!
Ahh thats better!
It’s amazing what you can think of on a lonely walk home :-)
Macabre…definitely….gruesome…..oh yeah…...but it’s also beautiful.
Simple in verse but sooo much depth in the story telling.
Brilliant!!
ladyb
fuck, excuse my language…my god…what a creative…hard hitting..beautiful horror this is…loved it.

you are quite the writer, pure magic here….maybe a bit dark, but, in my world magic has no color if it works
Lisa Jewell replied
I’m so glad you liked this….yes the metaphor is dark….I thought it appropriate to convey the message.
mychaelalchemy
sometimes, the darkness conveys better than the light….

Don’t quite know how to comment, there is so much of an endearing quality you make the reader feel, a sympathy…. you watch him mince his brains like you watch a kid make a mudpie and say isnt that cute, like he’s safely supervised, permitted to go on his journey, loved?
It definitely hit a few notes, the six invitations in particular, quite shamanic.
Thanks for directing me here, hope you’re enjoying this winter’s day, I’m about to eat pumpkin soup, and as it stands, from a cedar bench….
Lisa Jewell replied
How interesting are other peoples perspectives and interpretations are. I had not considered the mincing of his brain to be cute….granted sympathy was elicited on purpose…
I hope your pumpkin soup was creamy….

there are, of course, two distinctly different ways to be cooked. the first is the most heartbreaking. where, powerless to do more than watch, one is consumed by those closest – and by ones own passions, memories. at the end of the meal there are only bones to be scraped and burnt. the other is by choosing a recipe in advance, by bringing all the ingredients together (and throwing away anything that won’t taste right) and, through heat, making all these disparate elements into a single unified meal for self-consumption. until i read your poem i had thought the second way to be the most noble. but now i wonder – did he offer them what they had already taken, as a final protest, or was it freely given. an artwork lain at the feet of philistines out of love. a tragic diva or a saint?
and we all do this, don’t we? perhaps artists are the worst because we offer our meals to any who will eat.
your writing is elegant and clever – thought-provoking – it has left me both nourished and perplexed (like all true art must)
Lisa Jewell replied
How fascinating you are….I absolutely knew you’d provide food for thought, pun intended.
I wrote this after having a daydream vision. I had been thinking a great deal about how we seem to take, accept the things we like about a person while we either ignore, or try to change the aspects we do not like. Often we leave a person because of the traits we don’t particularly like. (In this instance I’m not referring to abusive traits, rather the every day type)
I have spent many hours pondering human weakness in regard to not coping with the hard stuff, the pain stuff, the frustrating stuff. We do tend to constantly move seeking out that which makes us feel good.
Repeating
Over and over and over…
My work can often leave me perplexed and vexed…;)
Elizium
Yes! Yes! and Yes! This is a truly remarkable piece of writing…this would make a fantastic and macabre short story, as there is so much hidden between the lines…
So very descriptive, visceral and it’s making me hungry for more!!!
Congratulations

Elizium x

... a dark sweat shudders from the brow, terrified it takes flight to purge itself of this heartless creator… grinding over the pale grey skin to dive off the cracks of the sombre moist smile that shines with a lifeless blinding white of perfect teeth…
.... awoken on the seventh… to nothing but myself… scorch my flesh for ever having sinned a flirt with hope… all i can do is grin… i am human… i am
.
wow… Such a powerful work conjured deep imagery within… thank you
