Hello!
Thanks so much for featuring me on Printmakers and Printmaking. I love this group and the artists in it. Printmakers are special people!
I just thought I would comment a little bit about how and why I came to love printmaking and utilize it in my work.
When I finished high school I went straight into a Fine Arts degree. At the time it was a choice between that and graphic design. Studying art at uni never really suited me though – I wanted to get my hands dirty and make art but it was all theory and art history. When it came time to choose a major I elected to do painting and drawing but I was late putting my forms in and missed out, so printmaking was actually my second choice. I’m very grateful that it turned out that way because ever since then I’ve just been in love with printmaking. It’s really become part of my identity and integral to my art practice.
I went on from uni to study illustration and design at Tafe, as although I had a degree in printmaking I felt my knowledge of actual art making skills were lacking. It was at Tafe where I really had the freedom as well as the guidance to explore and experiment with different mediums. Whatever I explored I always returned to linocuts and woodcuts. Part of the illustration diploma involved learning photoshop and thats where my illustration style started taking shape.
My art usually involves several steps – first I do a few rough sketches in pencil and work out a composition. This part can take a while as I can daydream and get a bit overwhelmed by the different possibilities! Then I work out which elements of the image will be hand done and which part can be done in photoshop. It’s a matter of cutting the lino and printing it, scanning the prints and then putting the finishing touches on in Photoshop, changing the composition and trying out different colour combinations.
I guess some people might prefer that printmakers work entirely traditionally, personally I enjoy the freedom and seemingly limitless possibilities that working with technology has afforded me.
I hope you enjoy my work! I will keep updating it and adding new prints and even some t-shirts, as often as I can.
I also have a website www.linocreative.com.au and also www.sandrakrumins.com which is all about illustration.
I will also be posting information on RedBubble about some upcoming exhibitions (in Sydney) soon!
Cheers!

Thanks Sandra, I enjoyed reading that and I can’t wait for you exhibitions to happen in Melbourne, I like it that you have pushed the possibilities with Photoshop and printmaking. I would love to see how you do it some day. I am happy to have you on my watchlist and honored to be a part of your journey in printmaking. BillyLee

Great to see your work, linocreative. It’s so alive and bright. I enjoyed reading your journal here as I’m always curious to learn how other people come to produce what they do, and their processes of arriving at choices and decisions towards an end result. Yours is certainly a most interesting journey.
(As an aside, my admission into the printmaking course at RMIT was also my second choice, but has become an absolute passion for me. I initially applied for the painting course and didn’t even know about the printmaking course. At the interview, after looking at my prints, they suggested I check out the printmaking course. I was rejected for painting, but was instantly accepted for printmaking! It’s so weird how our paths so often take the right direction unintentionally).
