I am hanging on to my autumn coat

standing all alone
in my autumn coat
auburn leaves
identify me

first snow has come
fallen soldiers
around me lie
resting now as should I

soon I will be covered
in a blanket of white
i am told not to be scared
it will insulate my young life

spring will bring warmth
enough too shed my coat
it will be time for a new color
green will be the new look

I will grow a few inches more
under the canopy of love
my elders, the pines and maples
that tower from above

they will protect me
through out the rain and shine
wrap their limbs around me
during windstorms that blind

when no one else is listening
unless you are one with us
you will hear my lessons from them
blowing in the wind gusts

the rustle of their leaves
the sway of their branches
as they express themselves
all parents have lessons

so fear for me not
next season I will be here
and waiting for your visit
to admire my new veneer!
