Oh man! I’ve done second curtain sync work before, and getting it to behave the way it looks in your head can be a real trick. But getting three dice to cooperate like this too? You must be very patient! Nicely done!

  • it took some time. this was very lucky timing.

OMG Well done. What a great shot. Tell me how many shots this take to finally capture this fantastic image. Love it :)

  • thanks Cathie. Yes this is the end result of about three months of weekends. I have deleted the other shots and there was a lot of them.

What a terrific payoff for such effort and creativity – I really love the unique flare this shot conveys! Extremely well done!

  • Thanks Mike. it did take two of us a while to get this.

Great shot. I really like this 2nd curtain work. What did you use for the continuous light to catch the motion?

I have something similar over at Flickr but it’s not as clean as your superb shot.

  • hello, we had been using different lights for the continuous light source. in the end we settled on a 50 watt low voltage household down light. it has a similar colour to the flash units. this way the trails of the dice are are not yellow or green or blue but white as the dice are.
    thanks for your comments.

Great work, and I love the way the numbers have come up.

  • Thank you, we did not try for the numbers it was more the effect we were looking for, then the numbers came up.

Yes, having tried this myself I can imagine it would be very frustrating if you wanted specific numbers to come up. In my selected shot, the three main dice showed 666 and hence helped with the title…

  • Hello just went and had a look at your photo of the dice. i was playing with five dice as well. in this photo the other two were out of frame and just lucky that the numbers came up like they did. i am going to try this again when a get some faster flash units, so the dice will just freeze still. you have some very nice photos on your site. thanks
