Eildon Trails
For those who dont know what these lines are they are stars.
I set the camera on the B setting and leave the shutter open for upto 10 hrs.
As the earth rotates it gives you these lines.I do not recommend the use of digital cameras for taking startrails

Jeff Burns
This is incredible. Well done. Amazing
Leigh Parkin
great work..as a budding astrophotographer, can certainly appreciate the thought/effort put into this shot. Interested in knowing what cam and settings you used for this re your digital cam comment..Noise the main prob?
Michael Bermi...
Indeed it is Leepee.
I have tried several times to use my 400D for startrails… no matter what settings I use, its always grainey!!
Michael Bermi...
Whoops, sorry… Er great shot linds!
Lindsay Knowles
Thanks Stuart,Jeff, leepee and Michael. leepee I used an old school Pentax MG with 100 speed film with a 1.7 lens set at about 5.6 and the exposure was for about 90 mins. I have seen digi cam shots but they just dont look the same. You do get alot of noise but that can be fixed if you have the time.
Naomi Frost
WOW, this is a stunner. Thanks for sharing.
Samantha Cole-...

Stunning. Love this!
Lindsay Knowles
Thanks for the very kind comments.
AdamDonnelly
This looks awesome. I had planned on trying this last night with the new moon but it was too overcast. You must have a few issues with dew, leaving your camera out at night for 10 hrs!
Peter Daalder
I wouldn’t recommend digital for this either…
Top shelf, Lindsay!

Sarah Matthews
Amazing work, inspiring stuff
Teresa Zieba
This kind of photograph never ceases to amaze me. Well done.
Brian Puhl IPA
Just to echo what you said, Digital cameras CAN do it, but I’ve experienced problems with my D80 at 18 minutes with what they call amp noise, the areas around the sensor heat up and cause a purple fringe. Other than that though, it came out pretty damn well, noise was not an issue.
Lindsay Knowles
Just trying to see where I said a digi cam CANT do it Brian. I have taken heaps with my Canon but as I said film is better for these type of shots.
The startrail pic you have posted looks like the sensor was starting to cook. This would be a real concern with a long exposure.
shanghaiwu
brilliant work

Jeremy Harrington

John Pacifico
Love this star trail.. very well shot image.
eltotton
Very cool. I love this shot. Well done.
Geoff Coleman...
Beautiful startrails shot – love the contrast between the colours in the sky and the trees. Digital is fine for startrails. You just have to take 30sec exposures and then combine them in PS – that way the noise problem goes away.
Lam Tran
Beautiful job!
JayVee
Nice work Linds.
Charl045
Fantastic!!!

I love star trail photography, great example of the lines that are created! The exposure is good too, I hate it when the foreground with get “too hot” because how long the shutter is open. Very nice
AthenaBlanco
Awesome star trails! Well Done!
felixx
Amazing shot!! I wonder if this could be done with a homemade pinhole camera ?
toolesque
I admire your style, and the fact that this is film. I have never used film, but am in the process of diving into that world, I can’t feel true about my love for light if I don’t explore all aspects of it, and I know film is a whole other world waiting for me. This shot is spectacular, and I appreciate it.
Marion Cullen
Damn cool.
Chelsea Lee
Simply Stunning!
Lindsay Knowles replied
Thanks Chelsea
kcranmer
I just started star trail shots…..this is SUPERB!
Lindsay Knowles replied
Thanks. Good luck with taking them and I look forward to seeing how you go. Are you using the 30 second method?
kcranmer
Hey Lindsay I just sent you a message…(30 second method?)...I have so much still to learn on these star trails…but I sent you an email and would be forever grateful with your advise…yours are amazing!
Kye Vincent
Awesome long exposure
LizVengeance
I love long exposure :D
I’m currently doing that as an assignment for my photo class (we use film)
what settings would you recommend for one hour, then two hours?
Joanne Bradley
Excellent work! Congrats on making homepage!
Peace Mitchell
Love this so much! congrats on home page!
illestwill
Amazing capture.
illestwill
I just commented on this like 1 second ago but what I meant or want to add is that this is an amazing phenomena. And all with no photoshop. Crazy. That’s not a diss to photoshop. Photoshop is great, but it’s great to see the things you can get without some of the later technological aids, such as PS and others.
Joaquin Loyzaga
exelent photo!
so the lines running across the page at oposite to the stars would be one of earths satelite’s im guessing?
pehpsi2
Magic!!
Ash rebeltherace
absolutely amazing
Brent Monger
I love timelapse/long exposure photos but I only use digital. Noise will just about always force me to keep it under 30min. I do love to look at other peoples’ long exposures.
Chetan Raghuram
Lovely, i’ve done some too, but not as good as yours..
Sekans
Beautiful! I’ve got to get away from the city lights and try these properly one day.
