Red Skies

Red Skies

Remember the saying:

Red Sky at Night; Shepherd’s Delight
Red Sky in the Morning, Shepherd’s Warning!

One of the most persistent of the weather sayings used by sailors as well as shepherds. There were no weather forecasts, as such in the days gone by, and one had to make their own predictions.

This is a loose watercolour 8×10”painted with two colours only Red and Green (Cadmium Red and Sap Green) and also mxing the two together to produce darker colours. Painted on Arches watercolour paper from my imagination.

Come take a walk with me…..

Oh great Linda…you are entering the challenge with this lovely painting…marvellous job of the two colour blending…I love all the touches of white…they add a lovely sparkle to the work…

  • Linda Callaghan replied

Yes Janis was determined to do one when I read there were not many entries….this is my second attempt I did another one but did not like it it was toooo busy…but happy with this one! tiped the paper a bit to get the runs and I am so surprised at the many depths of colours you can get just using two colours and kept the white of the paper for highlights. thanks so much glad you like it!

I really like to post challenges that are in fact real challenge s, more than just a competition where people post somethign they previously did…I think that in this way artists find skills they never knew they had, they try new ways of doing things, new combinations of colours etc…I had to modify the rules to attract more entries, but I am so pleased that you followed the original rules to the letter and found a new and exciting way of painting…it’s a great success Linda….can you post near the painting which red and which green you used? thanks so much…

  • Linda Callaghan replied

well seeing as I had some time yesterday I did enjoy dabbling…and was delighted with the result. The only thing is I used a watercolour wheel ….it is called Brilliant Water Colours, made in the Czech Republic and they are joined together one on top of each other.. 12 colours in all… It does not say what they are though? so what to do? This little pallet is great to take anywhere and I like it because you can get to the paint easy and not worry about paint drying up. Wil see if I can search it on the net or will ask at the art shop when I am next there.

It looks like Cadmium Orange and maybe Sap Green…

  • Janis Zroback

    Janis Zroback

Or it could be Cad Red…lets say it is…

  • Linda Callaghan replied

it is a Red Janis….as you can see the true colour in the sky….the green is more of a leaf green…most of my old watercolours have been thrown away due to them drying up so I could not find any to match the colours…..will go type the colours in description…I really do like my colour wheel just a shame there are no names
    !
