Daintree Forest, Australia
Pastel painting on Black Acid Free Canson Paper using hard chalk pastels and Faber Castell pastel pencils.
The magnificent Daintree Forest is located in tropical far north Queensland, Australia. This world heritage listed forest is over 135 million years old – the oldest in the world and spans 1,200 square kilometres.
It is home to the highest number of plant and animal species that are rare, or threatened with extinction anywhere in the world. It surely is the most diverse and beautiful example of mother nature at its very best.
“I walked alone into no man’s land
and with my eyes witnessed the beauty of nature’s hand.
Green veils of leaves and trees stood tall
Babbling sounds of water and then a bird’s call.
Standing proud surviving all time,
this magnifcent forest forever in its prime!
This is just a very small part of this tranquil and magical forest.

Inspiration for this painting came from my daughter’s photograph called Daintree Bliss which is just one of her many beautiful photos:tracyleephoto“

This is fantastic Linda. What is the medium – looks like acrylic. You have mastered the light & shade beautifully.
Linda Callaghan replied
If you read the description it mentions pastel at the bottom, your favourite medium Lynda!!..I used Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils from Germany with some hard pastels as well on coloured pastel paper…had to keep using a workable fixative and building up layers, pressing really hard in some areas to get the look I wanted, as with pastels I notice the colours do fade. Then took photo under a bright light which brought them out…was really happy with the result…thanks again dear Lynda :-)
Linda Ridpath

Someone just used the word ‘zowie!!! to me and I thought I’d keep it for something special. Zowie!!! Linda, this is very special. I love the way you’ve tackled this which, with the dark background, might have put many of us off as being difficult. You make a first class job of it. Five gold stars.
Linda Callaghan replied
oh Zowie!! what a great word to describe something you like…I might just use that myself :-D thank you so very much Brian for your lovely comment and for taking the time to view. I really like working with dark backgrounds for some reason as I like to push the subject forward which it does do depending on topic. Thanks so much also for the 5 star rating!!!!. ..best wishes :-D

Lynda Robinson
Oops Linda – How could I have NOT realised it was pastel!!!!! AND I read all the description!!! It just didn’t register! You did a magnificent job. I am surprised that you found the colours fade. Look forward to seeing more work influenced by your daughter’s travels. I would love to go to the Daintree one of these years!
Linda Callaghan replied
thanks Lynda…no worries something I would do! ..I do a pastel and spray it with fixative and then it seems to pale a bit (I am not sure if it is the moisture in the air here at the moment?) maybe it is because I have not bought colourfix paper? I did ask at the art shop and he said the pastel paper pad I bought would be fine and to spray with the fixative, he did not have any colourfix..maybe I need to spray more on! :-D appreciate your support !
Lynda Robinson
It might be the fixative that is the problem. Some brands do tend to change the colours a bit. I only use it very sparingly.
Linda Callaghan replied
thanks Lynda will see what happens next time!

roseart
THAT is a talent in itself Linda! I like to write poetry myself. But I never thought about adding it to my art. Although most of my work is portraits and there’s not much you can write about there. LOL
Linda Callaghan replied
thanks Rose I do appreciate your feedback and support. :
D only do a few lines seem that is all they need….you could try to add to the personality or thoughts of the portrait ..just a thought if you wanted to do poetry ..:)roseart
Nice suggestion Linda. I’ll give it a try!
