Primroses in the Dark

Linda Callaghan

Primroses in the Dark

An original watercolour on cold pressed paper of bright yellow evening primroses, (from the onagraceae family). These pretty yellow flowers open up in the evening. Their petals are heart shaped and delicate, a beautiful flowering plant indeed.

Look at my face it is yellow and bright
pretty and delicate open at night
yellow and soft I will smile at you
to make you feel alive and new

Thank you all – thought the black background (which is unusual in watercolour) would bring out the yellow and it did!

Your watercolours are beautiful as well as your acrylics Linda – maybe you can do both!

Great job with these delicate little flowers! I like the way you handled the leaves. They don’t overpower the flowers, and add so much to the feeling that one could reach into the painting and touch them. Very nice use of the dark negative spaces in the background. Also like the way you added just a touch of backlighting and varied the colors of the leaves and the petals with their complimentary colors. Works very well.

  • Linda Callaghan replied

Thank you sooo much Marsha for taking the time to comment on my painting – it is a big help to receive informative feedback from a professional! I can then relate what you say to my future paintings. I am still floundering around wondering if I should stick to one medium or keep going with all of them. Really appreciate your comment :-)

It might work better to become familiar with one medium before trying another, but don’t limit yourself. You know best what seems to be working for you. Some people seem to thrive with multiple challenges in more than one medium at one time, but it I personally would find it a bit mind boggling. Many art professors will have students try pencil for a few weeks, then charcoal, then oils, etc. My suggestion is just do what you are comfortable doing and don’t worry if it is the “correct” way of going about it!

  • Linda Callaghan replied

Thanks for the advice Marsha, and your time I really appreciate it – at the moment I am enjoying acrylics so will keep going with them and see how I go :-)

Beautiful painting, I would definitely hang it on my wall and I am into acrylics and oil painting. I’ve never painted with watercolor, it always seemed too difficult.

Okay … it’s New Year and I’ve just realised that I typed “lively” instead of “lovely” ... it coincides with my discovery that my son’s Black Russian drink which I am sampling while he is at his New Year’s party is actually 25% proof …. oops .. I had already had three beers and a whisky. Actually … the painting is “lively” too … as well as lovely. Oh shut up Dave .. time for bed :) Happy 2009!!!!!

  • Linda Callaghan replied
