When I was a kid in school, I hated art. Don’t get me wrong, I loved making art for myself, but when it came to assignments for class I hated it. I couldn’t wait until it was an option that I didn’t have to take.
The reason for this was simply that when I created my work, it was never good enough.
Yes, I realized even then there are techniques and that can be learned, but the lack of encouragement from the Art Teacher ( to be kind, mostly it was abuse) turned me off even trying for years.
It wasn’t until I was an adult that I was brave enough to try again. Even though there were extremely talented people in my adult class, I was not made to feel like a second class citizen and despite being great with colour I really had a lot to learn about drawing and design. With positive criticism and encouragement I found I really enjoyed creating art in many mediums and was able to improve my technique too.
I hope that these days, primary teachers encourage even their least talented students to enjoy the act of creating art; one can always learn to perfect technique.
