it’s a fascinating work Lina and a great idea for a series. I know that humans behave differently in cities (where elevators are) than in cosy country towns. We city folk learn to ignore each other because we are surrounded by hundreds of strangers every day.
    Fabulous work of art!!!!

  • linaji replied

I never really lived full time in a busy city.. but in Californina somehow.. we are a bit out of touch with the neighbor thing.. for some reason I do not get to know mine.. funny thing this.. however I do so love the old elevators I have run into ..while in S.F. visiting.. they are a bit scary thrilling all at once.. thank you so much Marion!

Hey Lina, I’m in a 9 story bldg here at work, and although I only use the stairs now, I used to study “elevator behavior” for a long time; the instinct to always be equal distances apart from eachother and to shift when someone gets on or off to maintain that distance; elevator small talk; 9 kinds of perfume and cologne; the Sneezer; the malfunction and the smell of fear… I thought it would be cool to hang a dartboard up in an elevator, and ride up and down just to see people’s reactions as they thought about that. Also, if you carry a clipboard and pen, anyone can pretend to be an elevator inspector, just look at odd details, make scribbly notes, and mutter to yourself.

  • linaji replied

Oh Syd.. you got me on the floor.. I feel like getting my clipbord and a hidden camera!! I am having fun getting to know you!

...and when I was just hired, I didn’t know there was a “private penthouse” on the 10th floor here at corp. headquarters! Only one of the elevators goes there, and it takes a key to get all the way to the top. so, one early morning I alone went from lobby to 9th; doors wouldn’t open… hmmm; went all the way to the lobby by itself, me still alone. So I push for 9th again, up I go to 9th, doors wouldn’t open; I push for 8th so I can walk up, but the elevator goes UP! Not Possible, my mind screams at me, There Is Nothing Higher Than 9!!! For just a few seconds, I actually believed I had died on my way to work, and was riding a mystical elevator to Heaven!!!

Anyway, doors open, I see blue carpet from my position plastered against the back wall, doors close, back down to 9th, I get off, curse all elevators, find out about the “penthouse”, get teased for weeks, ha ha, but still remember the Elevator To heaven!

  • linaji replied

REally fantastic story Syd.. laugh I did.. and for this.. after putting up my last piece.. well the Hallmark Dynasty.. hummm 10 floors… and no buttons.. lolo heaven indeed!

I see a great sense of form in your abstracts, something rare to achieve, which you mostly do get somehow, excellent color palettes, varying in each of these works, a remarkable working style and the concept of this series extending into a book…just wonderful… darling…where are we heading…? xox
