Gypsy Woman

Who Are The Gypsies?

What is known about the Sinti and Roma is that they arrived in Germany in the late 1400’s after a series of migrations which brought them from Northern India Punjab States.., through Persia, Asia Minor and Greece, the Balkan and Slavic States, to Austria and Germany.

Along the way, they converted to Christianity. Also, along the way, they acquired a wide range of stereotypes including “accomplices to the Crucifixion,” thieves, practitioners of the magic arts, beggars, etc. Their itenerant lifestyles, non-conventional behaviors and mystical image brought them under governmental suspicion from the early Middle Ages on. They were fairly consistently defined as “stateless” wanderers, a threat to the moral order and a burden upon society.

Gypsy Woman belongs to the following groups:

The first time I ever heard of gypsy was from “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” hense a very beautiful image like that of Esmeralda. I was told that gypsy meant Egyptina (and I see camels here!) then later on there theives; totally different from what I pictured before.

  • linaji replied

there are many meanings perhaps alone the way.. but I know without a shadow of a doubt.. since I have meet Gypsys from Romainia and India.. that they are indeed connected!
    xox you rock btw…Linaji

This is a beautiful capture but she does not look like any Sintiza or Roma that I have ever seen. I presume you took this picture in India. I wander what their tribe is because “Gypsies” is just a given name because people thought in Europe that they came from Egypt. As Roma’s came to Europe in the 1400’s from Punjab, Sinti came from the land of Sinth which is Pakistan today and have been already in Europe in the 1100’s. Sinti left India over 2000 years ago. I am a Sintiza and was born in Germany, many people have a misnomer about us, people think that there are “Gypsies” because they travel, they can call themselves that way if they which to do so, but being Sinti or Roma you have to be born to that nation you just can’t become one. People also need to understand that Sinti and Roma had no choice but to travel because they where not accepted by society, it was not that romantic as it seemed, but a way of survival. Today many Sinti and Roma are well educated but unfortunately many are still deprived to receive education do to social standards Romania and Italy are one of the countries. Sadly to say hatred and prejudice still exists today in many countries.

There are actually two branches of ’’Gypsies” – The Rroma (who were originally from the Punjabi region of India as you stated), the word Rroma means ’’Husbandmen” and their language is still very similar to many Indian dialects.
Then there are the Gypsies – who received their name from Egypt – where they originated.
Regardless of what branch – many Gypsies still face intense discrimination the world over. And are among the most persecuted peoples in Europe.
Thank you for this amazing tribute and information. But most of all thank you for showing them love and compassion.
(My paternal grandfather and his family were gypsy circus performers and endured much hardship under Nazi Germany.)
