Tell Me About Your Country!

So I’m giving a lesson on Australia on Thursday! I would like to know if you guys could help me out. What do you guys like to do for fun? What kind of outdoor activities do you guys do?

p.s. are there any coral reefs near you guys?

Thanks a bunch!

Hi Lina. I’m from Melbourne, so no coral reefs here. Just wonderful beaches, and mountains near us. There are some coral reefs on the east coast and the west coast, and I’m sure you’ll here from the Queenslanders soon enough about the Great Barrier Reef and from the Western Australians about their lesser known, but no less interesting, and more easily accessible coral reefs. At the moment it’s pretty cold in Melbourne with night temperatures down to about 4degreesC, and when it snows in the mountains the wind from there is miserable. Outdoor activities for me include bushwalking, walking the dogs, barbeques with friends, photography, birdwatching, sketching, golf. Around our house we have many different sorts of parrots/cockatoos, and of course we have possums everywhere at night. We found an Echidna in our back yard a while back (a gorgeous, spiky creature which curls itself up when it feels threatened) – a fairly unusual sighting around city suburbs.

But I will leave it up to some others to fill you in further on interesting bits and pieces of this fantastically unique country.

I come from Perth which is on the western coast of Australia, as you probably already known Australians are fairly laid back and easy to get along with.

Perth can be quite hot during summer (we get a couple of days nearing 45c), and for outdoor activities we love going to our beautiful blue beaches with clean white sand and swimming, playing sports like soccer, cricket, rugby, basketball, footy (Australian rules) and more.

I am 21 so I might speak for myself in this aspect, but we also like to go out at night and have a bit of fun, drink a few drinks and relax the next day.

I hope this was a helpful insight into a bit of Aussie culture!

    Hey Lina,

I live in Darwin, it’s in the northern part of australia
one of the main industries for Darwin and NT is tourism.
We have Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park close by.
Not sure what age group your teaching.
Darwin is in the northern Territory.
Some animals here in the NT are the Crocodile
    goanna’s
kangaroo’s of course. Lots of birds, like white breasted sea eagle
    kookaburra
In the NT, we are in the tropic, and with that we get a wet season and a dry season, no winter, summer, spring or autum. the wet season we get lots of rain. one year we had 2500mm of rain in 4 months. that’s 100 inches. the rivers get very large, like this one
NT also have large cattle stations, (farms) they cover 1000’s of square miles.
Alot of australia is very dry.
Australia also has lots of minerals which we mine and export.

not sure what else you would like to know, ask and we will see what we can do

    Hi Lina,
I live on the south coast of New South Wales, about 2.5 hours south of Sydney, in a small community at Vincentia, on the shores of Jervis Bay.

Jervis Bay is a National Marine Park and is home to lots of dolphins, seals, penguins and whales visit regularly. There is a little bit of coral but you really need to travel further north on the east coast (Queensland) to see the best coral. According to the Guinness Book of Records, one of Jervis Bay’s beaches has the whitest sand on the entire planet!

It’s a very beautiful part of the world and most of the leisure activities revolve around the outdoors – swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving, bushwalking and beachcombing. Abundant wildlife – I even get kangaroos and wallabies in my backyard, as well as many species of parrots, possums, and bandicoots regularly “aerate” my lawn!

Not much to do at night although we do have some good restaurants and a cute cinema in a neighbouring village.

What do you guys like to do for fun?
    Red Bubble.

What kind of outdoor activities do you guys do?
I live in an area called the Central Coast, so there are National Parks and beaches near me. When the weather permits, I like to walk the beach and hike along bush tracks. Get really in with nature. Other times its shopping.

I would love to get into hang gliding.

Here is a random link to Aussie humour – just did a google search. Its a starting point for our point of view – includes some slang too (which we just love). Of course you will get stereotypes where ever you look and contradictions and eccentricities.

We love sport but not everyone, we have a massive multicultural community – Sydney in particular has a strong Asian presence, Melbourne is known for its Greek community etc, we are so laid back we often don’t give a shit, we love sun – but can’t live in it any more (ozone layer), we think Australia is the best country in the world but some of us havn’t been aywhere else, we are economically strong but lots of people live in hidden poverty, we are a hybrid of royalists and republicans (not the political party type), we sometimes forget we live in a black Australia with a black history, we live in a democracy but many peole don’t have a voice, we are in love with the motorcar – coz everything is so far away, we are often fish out of water – we love water and swimming but we are running out of water to drink, we love the BBQ and having a ‘yarn’, the ‘outback’ is a place and nowhere simultaneously, we have very big sky’s and open spaces :) Oh those are some thoughts for you just for fun. You might need to look some up :)

I love squash, body surfing, walking (anywhere), cycling, dancing, drinking with mates, coffee culture, performng arts, cinema, camping, hiking, gardening.

    Good luck

    Hi Lina,
I’m in Geelong on the fringe of Victoria’s western district. It’s a great place to live, close to the beautiful surfcoast and Otways forrests. We’re right into the acoustic music scene down here and often feel we are the exception to the AFL madness that seams to engulf everyone in this state. Anyway, there’s more than enought music to keep me busy down our way with festivals, pubs, music-camps, and a stack of music loving locals all over the south west and central Victoria.
    Cheers

    Hi Lina,

I’m from Perth. In Summer we head to the beach for a swim or some fishing, In Winter head up to the hills or down south into the forests.

I enjoy bushwalking, photography, 4WDing camping, fishing and travelling.
