Franc & Gerta (Part 1)

there was a Franc.
Franc was a slightly built man. An old 48
but fit and healthy in every way.
He stood
no taller
than one foot high.
He was the size of
a large doll.

Franc was to be
Someone’s reluctant pet
purchased by a woman
from an exotic market
which smelt of alien musk,
a mix of oils
and spice.

His amount
after minutes of joyous haggling
had been to Franc’s mind
embarrassingly low.
He had sniffed at the price
and lamented the fact
that his sense of self worth
& market value
may never reach a match.

Franc was an educated, well-read man,
who liked his hair to be neat ( the part cutting it’s way across his head)
and his black suit cleaned.
He had hoped
when he had been hanging in ‘That’ shop
-up for sale, that his eventual owner
would appreciate his meticulous appearance
and marvel at their own reflection in his highly polished shoes.
First impressions are,
after all,
very important
as they can provide a solid base for a future relationship
or be like shifting sand
where any hope of love
is as elusive as a dune of sand.

His laces were never frayed.
His hair only slightly grey.

The sophisticated woman
who had examined
and later purchased
gave him the vaguest of hopes
that he would be a prized possession
rather than the lonely pet –
forgotten and brain starved
or the brutalized pet –
abused and neglected…
with spirit torn.

This woman
with her profound style
& high bustle
heartened his spirits somewhat
and he smiled the smallest smile at her
as she covered his dome-flavoured cage
with it’s silken cover.
Through it she whispered
in a Macadamia voice…
“I know Someone
who is going to just adore you.”

Franc strapped himself into his swing
which was a comfortable lounge
big enough for one
and began to dream of freedom
for the first time
in a long, long lifetime.

Sometime later,
Franc awoke to the sound of voices…
It was the woman
& someone else.
“Now Darling,”
said the Woman,
“Close your eyes and open your arms
I’ve brought you home a treat…
That’s it.
Close your eyes.
Keep them closed………”

The Womans hands
entered Franc’s cage
her fingers
circled his torso,
picked him up effortlessly
and maneuvered him,
ever so carefully,
through the impractical
cage door.

To enjoy the moment
Franc too,
shut his eyes
the shrillest of shrieks
and clomping of clumsy feet
shook him out
of his reverie.

His eyes snapped open
to see a toddler
three times his height
and of generous girth
smashing her way towards him,
with her red, wet mouth open
and salivating with excitement.

Franc managed to emit a small “no”
as he was picked up
and squashed in a spine- bending embrace
which caused the blood to rush to his brain.

He lost consciousness
to the voice of the Woman
sounding slightly concerned…
“Be gentle, Darling,
You don’t want to break him.”

Oh My God…………………………………………….. Compelling to the very end, I thought he was going to be fed to the cat, but a toddler, how bad is that. I loved, sadly how he was disappointed at his price, him looking so nice and laces not frayed, hair barely grey. This is an awesome ride of imagination. Such good stuff is pouring out of you, again and again, this is my favourite, Absolutely marvellous………………. can I purchase him??

  • Thank you so much. Your words are heartening. I love these characters and it feels so lovely that you are on this ride. I want to have him too… he is really beautiful in my mind. :) xx

:o0 Surreal! Once I got past the idea of a “human pet” I was totally rivetted and I couldn’t feel more sorry for Franc!! RUN AWAY! ESCAPE! I wouldn’t keep Franc in a cage (sniff). Fancy being a toddler’s pet… drool, slobber, chew, screech :o(
Compelling and excellent story L, I can’t wait for the next bit!!
