Together We Shall Live Forever

Last breath, last beat of heart holds no pain
I sat there listening to your sweet sighs
and in the weary morning felt you wane
beneath my fingers and under my eyes.

So fragile is the beat that brings you in
to warmth of life so natural and new;
so delicate the pain that comes within
to lift away the endless Soul of you.

Together we had lived the finest days
and in each moment sensed no sign of death
but life hands us a fate we must obey –
to sit here, silent, feeling your last breath.

Someday I’ll reach you, my soul to sever
And together we shall live forever.

A tribute to my cat. My soul’s little companion, stronger than many human ties.

After having to go through this recently myself… I understand the loss of family. I love this piece.

  • Thank you so much, Russell. I’m sorry you lost a loved one, too – it’s never easy and always so painful. I wish you well. Thank you for this beautiful comment.

I love you, beautiful soul! This is a precious tribute, one I’m all too akin to this season in life. xox

  • I love you too, Jen! Alas that growing gives us so much and yet takes so much away. And the more we open our hearts to love, the more we open our souls to pain. It isn’t fair!

Lily your poem reminds me of my cat who died 10 years ago . She was a stray, and took to me right away . As she was an adult when she came to live at our place i never knew her age. She gave me 12 years of smiles , cuddles and sheer joy.
This is a beautiful tribute to your love and life with your beloved cat.
the ties are deep , they remain a delicate memory.

  • Thank you, Jane ~ it’s always so hard to lose a pet, especially when you’re so close. I have a stray at home, and he is a delight! Rachel was the only cat I had since kittenhood, so I was able to be with her almost literally from birth until death. They are, indeed, a delicate memory. <3

You capture the grief of loss perfectly. You have me in tears, but the good kind, the cleansing kind.

You, my dear, have a true gift! You are an alchemist with words.

  • Thank you, Samantha! You have always given me such great encouragement to keep writing, and I love yours as well. YOU have a gift! <3

  • Thank you so much! It came from the heart, and I suppose the truest work is made when it’s felt so deeply. :)

Wow. This is absolutely wonderful! You captured the pain of losing a pet perfectly. This is what people mean when they say a piece of work is “beautifully heartbreaking.”
