Useless Objects

I am a collector of
small objects
Just large enough for a shelf
Or a box
Or a windowsill.
Beautiful, impractical things,
Dainty, pretty things –
Useless objects;
I gather them.
There is a teapot –
It fits in the palm of my hand.
I bought it today
It has little holes on top
Made to hold incense
I took it as an invitation
For elves to drink tea with me
Anytime they desire.
Useless objects;
I gather them.
There are Christmas ornaments
Strung against my walls
With 10 calendars
From various years gone by
And dried roses from my Love
Hanging from my ceiling.
A box of old letters here,
A collection of cameos there,
And some fabric and some ribbon
I’ll probably, maybe, most likely not
Use someday.
Useless objects;
I gather them.
I am a collector of
Small memories
Just sweet enough to hold onto
Just small enough for most people
To forget
Oh to forget …
Small memories,
Little moments,
Like tea pots that fit in my palm
Old memories.
Useless objects;
I gather them
I gather them all.

1 AM rambles on an empty stomach and achy head. Not great, I know. ;)

    And they combine to make an endearing image in the mind of the reader:-))

  • Ah, thank you! :) They combine also to make a mess of my house. ;)

    I collect small useless objects too!!!! I often find things on the ground outside. “And some fabric and some ribbon / I’ll probably, maybe, most likely not / Use someday” haha… it’s all stored in various little boxes and places in my apartment. When I move I usually leave it all behind (best traveling light), but everywhere I settle, I start collecting again. My new favorite thing to collect is tiny steel ball bearings. I don’t know why, but they’ve been showing up lately.
    cheers! x

    Beautiful expression, Lily… it reminds me so much of a poem I wrote some time ago, but from a man’s perspective, you need a little sack to hold things of your soul, horse hair, a ribbon from a woman’s hair… etc. Perhaps I’ll put it on. It is beautiful to surround yourself with beauty and meaning… as long as we are not stuck in it, of course. Love to you, sweet lady.

    Awh, I like this :D It reminds me of how you saved that stick from the day you had lunch with your English professor under the tree :) And I can relate – I save every little thing, no matter how impractical. I still have movie tickets from up to three years ago, and that’s only beginning to cover it…but anyway, great poem :D
