Artist's Description

Cotman Watercolors, on watercolor paper

I painted this for Solo Exhibition’s Abstract Workshop, which was a real exercise in letting go and just CREATING. I loved it. I used Sasha Lazard’s song, “Ode to Innocence” as my inspiration, but it turned out to be something else entirely.

It was amazing and freeing to do this workshop. Every workshop lends me something different and teaches me something new, and this was both a lesson in salvaging art (this was painted over an old, pretty bad drawing) AND in playing with abstract.

For me, this piece turned into a representation of melancholy, and my own expression of internal pain: depression, worry, insomnia, general blue moods … the red paint made me think of blood – which represents both death and being alive.
