Artist's Description

Taylor Morrow as Juliet, Shakespeare in the Park 2012

I was assistant director alongside director Yasmine Jaffri. Warren, Michigan.

Many people have scorned “Romeo and Juliet” for being a play about two immature and hasty teenagers who did not know real love. Have these people remembered what it was like to be young and in love? Whatever love you feel, THAT is real at that moment. The love you felt for a highschool sweetheart cannot rival the love for a husband, but it was the most romantic love you had felt until then – does that make it unreal? Does youth cancel out emotions? Does young age and brief hours mean love is false? Romeo and Juliet died before they could explore their love … theirs is not a story of a helpless girl and swooning boy, but of a woman who took power into her own hands, and a man who followed his lover into death.

Vignette added in Picasso

ROMEO
Lady, by yonder blessed moon I swear
That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops—
JULIET
O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon,
That monthly changes in her circled orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.
