For a class assignment in self-portraiture (Elements of Art), we had to digitally manipulate a self-portrait any way we desired. I chose to layer my photograph over John William Waterhouse’s “Soul of the Rose” – one of my very favorite paintings. Added an oval frame and blurred edges.
I am deeply inspired by Waterhouse’s work, and I’ve always felt a deep connection to his models – particularly the Soul of the Rose. She is a woman who I would have loved to sit and have tea with. Ask what it was like to pose for Waterhouse. See if that blue gown really existed. Try on the beads in her hair. I’m utterly enchanted by her, and the inspiration from Waterhouse has had a large impact on my life: both creative and non-creative.
The Soul of the Rose being one my favorite works, my friend generously gave me a framed copy of it which is now beside my bed where I can always gain inspiration from Waterhouse’s talent – upon arising and going to sleep! :)
