I love to sew, and using a machine has always been more of a hassle for me than the soothing, meditative quality of hand stitching. I made this dress by hand for a local theatre’s production of Beauty and the Beast. It is made to fit two actresses and myself.
I find that the “womanly arts” are fading in many circles, and that the peace and beauty of doing work purely by hand is something we are forgetting, as a society. We don’t handwrite letters, wash our own dishes, scrub our cars, or even open cans without the use of machines anymore.
My grandmother, mom, and myself were all raised to make use of traditional methods, including grinding our own flour, air-drying laundry, herbal remedies, baking, no dish washer, etc. Little things, but they have instilled in me a love and passion for the quaint, quiet days of old.
This dress, shown here unfinished, marked a big step for me. :)
I would like to see women embrace the beauty of Creation again. I think we stepped back from it in fear that it would tie us to a world many wish to leave behind, when instead we left behind the traditions and passions of centuries of women who came before us. And, while this is a photo of a craft, it is meant to be an artistic representation of that craft and a remembrance of eras long gone by,
