Gretna Green is a village in the south of Scotland famous for runaway weddings . It is in Dumfries and Galloway near the mouth of the river Esk and historically the first village in Scotland following the old coaching route from London to Edinburgh . Gretna Green railway station serves both Gretna Green and Gretna . The Quinthill railcrash with 227 deaths the worst rail crash in Britain occured near Gretna Green in 1915. Gretna Green is one of the worlds most popular wedding destinations hosting over 5000 weddings a year or one in every six scottish weddings The marriage act stated that if both parties to the marriage were not 21 then consent had to be given by the parents . This act did not apply in Scotland where it was possible for boys to marry at 14 and girls at 12 with or without consent .Since 1929 both parties have had to be at least 16 but there is still no consent needed.
In England and Wales ages are now 16 with consent and 18 without consent . In 1856 Scottish law was changed to require 21 days residency for marriage and a further law change was made in 1940 . The residential requirement was lifted in 1977 . Lumix DMC-TZ6 Pseudo HDR

progressed from holiday snaps to being serious about it just 3 years ago.I keep a compact camera in my handbag at all times .It is more convenient, an SLR is to heavy and complicated for me. I just like to point and shoot. I do enhance my images slightly with pseudo HDR on a single image. Now I have a hobby and a passion.

Thanks for the picture and the narrative, Lilian. Good picture!

  • Thank you David . It was a bad day when we arrived here and I took this photo from underneath my umbrella .. Giving it the halo effect in HDR took the dark sky away from the top of the roof .
