Not it’s real name. I don’t know if it even has a real name. I doubt it.
Was walking past this tiny tarn on the way to Lake Lilla on Fathers Day and possibly would have missed the fact that it was frozen over if not for Tinnie pointing it out. Thank you Mark – I owe you! When I went over to check it out I noticed that the heavy frost on the button grass stems was not blanket frost as I expected it to be. It was millions of tiny individual crystals each about 5mm long.
It was a magic frozen wonderland over in there. Snow patches all over, Ice crystals on the grass stems, a pond frozen over with a crystaline structure. I could have spent a lot longer there than I did.
The horizon shadow that is about 200 metres in altitude above me in this shot, took 4 minutes to get to this tarn. I was amazed at how fast it came down the cliff face.

This looks mighty cold Garth hope you had a thermos of hot coffee with you

  • I had thermals, gloves and a beanie on, and there was no wind so the cold wasn’t a problem.
Not only that, tinnieopener the champ came through again – with a thermos full of sugared black tea.
    We were in heaven!

Ha Ha……glad you took my advice and captured an absolute pearler……another Cool Bananas Garth:o)

  • Like I said – I owe you.
But next time, instead of giving me “the shot” I want you to take it for yourself!!
Thank you also for the CBs mate.

That’s gorgeous, Garth, pity you didn’t get down there with your macro lens!!!

  • Thank you Mel.
As a matter of fact ……… I did a bit later on the path near Lake Lilla of crystals growing on the chicken wire non slip netting LOL, couldnt help myself, no great art though, just a record shot.

  • I did do another one near this pool when the light hit the grass – and at 100% you can see the individual crystals on the foreground grass in the wide angle shot. I might post later but it still won’t be large enough on here to see the crystals.

Great idea using this little tarn Garth….superb and different Cradle shot.

  • Thank you Mark.
If it wasn’t for tinnie I would have walked straight past without even seeing it.
When he pointed it out my eyes nearly popped out of my head.
    A real F&%# YEH! moment.
