The Second Line of Defence
The first line of defence is the offshore reefs.
Then next are these offshore rocky islets to take the oomph out of what is left.
This day the most impressive explosions were from the ones not quite big enough to break on the offshore reef ,and therefore they marched into these rocky outcrops still bearing their full force and power that had driven them across a thousand miles of Southern Ocean.

G’day GARTH!
A mighty impact caught at its peak with an expertly wielded exposure.
It looks like it would have been one of those ginormous KAWHUMPAHs that you can actually feel through your feet.
A great depiction of power.

Dennis
Garth Smith replied
Thank you Dennis, yes lots of KAWUMPAHS that day. Captain Fathom said it was significant 4 metres with a maximum of 7 metres but no idea how big this is except “pretty big”.

drec
Looks a little Dark and Stormy, nice one.
Garth Smith replied
Thank you drec, fairly typical Tasmanian spring day at the back end of a low, wind 10knots SW with big gusts quite regularly, bright sunshine to totally overcast, a small shower as well.
Rugged up because of the wind and rain, sweating like hell under it all because of the sun.
Just your typical 4 seasons in one day Tassie weather.
Craig Harris
Nice colouring Garth and great capture also
Garth Smith replied
Thank you very much Craig
Themis
Brilliant capture (and I mean both brilliant and a catch). It looks like force 7-8 Beaufort – I got spray inside my compact’s lens on one of those days!
Garth Smith replied
Thank you Themis, and thank you for the Beaufort link. That does sound like the conditions (7-8) but I am a bit puzzled by the apparent lack of white caps in the photo.
Themis
You’re very welcome. I think the white caps don’t always form away from shore – I think it depends how ‘gusty’ the wind is, and if it’s strong but constant you may not get the white caps (but get the deep wave). I have a picture posted, it was taken between islands, but the sea is sometimes whipped by wind and that day it was gusty, varying between probably 5 and 8 – I got lucky and got surf caps well away from shore (lucky because, although choppy, it was nowhere near the 7m, and therefore I kept my lunch ;-) and kept taking pictures almost the whole crossing).
Veronica Schultz

You are now Featured in All water in motion congrats!
Garth Smith replied
Yes, when the ocean does this its great to see and hear.
Capturing it impressively can be quite hard sometimes because a lot of the action can happen so far out. The better it gets the further away it gets.
Thank you very much for the feature PJ, I’m stoked and honoured.
A.M. Ruttle

Garth Smith replied
Thank you David, I did crop it after I got it onto the computer. I generally take things a little wide for that purpose. As for the timing I probably took about 20 shots of 5 waves and picked the best.

Dusker
Just took a few moments away from moderating on 101, chose this group as haven’t looked at it for a while. This one is an immediate favourite. Having been down the Great Ocean Road recently understand how long it can take to just “get this shot”. Love the crash of the sea on the rocks and the stormy background. Would love to know your F stop and speed.
Garth Smith replied
Thank you Dusker, glad you like it.
