I remember summer ......

I remember summer ......

..... when the poppies dried and baked under the hot sun, the warm wind gently blowing through the slender stalks, desicating the heads in the paddock.
I love winter and the change of seasons, but I always get nostalgic for lazy summer days this time of year.

Good Morning Garth .This is a very nice image I really like the contrast of the steel blue bulbs and the rust of the stalks I also like the contrasts of shapes lines and repition of pattern. This would work well as an abstract. DOF is excellent. Great work here!

  • Garth Smith replied

Thank you very much Patrick, yes it was the blue vs brown that caught my eye as much as anything. I was driving the back roads (as I love doing) and came across a paddock of these. Had seen dry standing stalks heaps of times before but had never noticed the vibrancy of the colours like was evident here. We had heatwaves last summer and it seemed to bring out an intensity in a lot of normal colours.

Evocative. Late summer, warm sun, dry wind, crackly brown stalks and seed heads. Very simple but a lovely story. :)

Exactly Lynne, you have summed it up perfectly.

This is an auto fav. It’s so awesome… I remember walking through the poppy fields in Europe when I was a child and it’s one of my most fond memories. Then in September the red was all gone and only the pods remained though there was always something so magical about them. They all stood tall like soldiers – even though the petals were long gone. I love this capture Garth, the colour is also very wonderful. ♥

  • Garth Smith replied

Thank you very much Janette and sorry for the delayed response.

Wonderful depth of field. Poppies are so amazing from the the time they burst out of their jackets right through to the dried buds shown here. The tones in this are terrific.

  • Garth Smith replied

Thank you very much Lynn & Lee. I had never quite seen or captured these tones like this before, I think the heatwaves we had last summer had very special light qualities that brought that little extra out of certain parts of the countryside.

  • Jan Timmons

    Jan Timmons

This is poetry, Garth! I love the patterns and I do love the poppy pods full of seeds for the coming year. Love this shot! I didn’t expect to have such an positively excited reaction to this, but the colours, pattern and the shallow depth of field makes this just too, too tempting. Don’t make me buy it, please!

  • Jan Timmons

    Jan Timmons

Uh, oh. I’m weakening! Hold me back. My accountant would chastise me.
Way too appealing, and deserving many, many exclamation points. !

  • Garth Smith replied

Thank you very much for the beautiful words Jan.
And just to make things that little bit harder for you, and to maybe appease your accountant a certain extent – I have just dropped my markup on this one from 100 to 40% for a couple of days.
Don’t feel at all obligated though.

you’re gonna think i’ve lost my freaking mind here-
but that scene makes me think of ladies walking away with their sunday hats on their heads, i swear i can see them moving…
awesome seems too shallow a word for this

  • Garth Smith replied 29 days ago

No I dont actually. I see them too.
Skinny old harridans walking home from church with taught faces and the cloned daughters in tow.
And …well….. it may be too shallow….. but you can call it awesome if you like.. LOL
    Thank you very much rubyjo
