Nelson Falls
A small tannin stained creek on the edge of the Tarkine in north-west Tasmania spills its way toward the sea.
The colouring is a natural stain that comes out of the heath, button grass and melaleuca vegetation. This stained water is very common in Tasmania and is some of the sweetest water I have ever drank.
When the water is shallow with a sand bottom it is a beautiful sepia tone and as it gets deeper it turns black.
When it hits turbulence it whitens the same as any water does and gives a myriad sepia shades depending on the level of turbulence.

No other way to put it…an AWESOME shot!! There is a waterfall in West Virginia called Blackwater Falls that features the same tannins. Unlike the falls you captured in your excellent photo, BW falls gets tannins from the crude oil that leaches it’s way toward the surface. The water I dare say is not something you want to consume but none the less make for a great photo shoot. Congrats on your effort! Jim in Carolina

Ann Van Breemen
Very unusual, Garth. Love the colours and the smooth, silky water. I’ve been to Tassie once, and would love to go back. One of my favourite places. The last time I went I only had a Canon compact film camera. It took nice shots, but, oh, how I would love to go back with the gear, (and knowledge) that I’ve got now!!
Garth Smith replied
I know exactly what you mean, bit like me and the Glasshouse Mountains.
Don’t get on a plane today though, flat grey skies, much rain & much wind.
Garth Smith replied
ps thank you for the kind words.
Ann Van Breemen
What, rain in Tassie?? Never. The last, and only, time I went was right after Xmas. We left Brisbane in humid, 32 degree heat and arrived in Launceston to rain and cold. Had to dig through our suitcases for jumpers. It rained on and off for the whole two weeks we were there, but we absolutely loved it. Still got to see and do plenty of stuff in between showers. My children were only small, so we didn’t exactly climb mountains, but we did go down into the Maracoopa Caves and to the Columbia (I think?) Falls. Plus other family orientated stuff. All good fun, but a lot different to what I would do now.:)

I just love this shot – the tannin gives the water a richness not usually seen in these types of smooth water shots!
Garth Smith replied
Thank you very much, the funny thing is I didnt really realise that this was unusual to so many people until I posted it here. I have been admiring these little falls for 25 years and creeks this colour too so its what I am used to seeing.
