Artist's Description

Ship’s Figurehead on the Mexican Navy training vessel of the same name depicting the Aztec ruler of Tenochtitlán from 1520-1521. Cuauhtémoc was a cousin of Moctezuma II, former ruler. He came to the throne just as Cortes was overtaking the Aztec capitol, both with troops and smallpox. Under pain of torture (feet to the fire) he refused to give Cortes any information on Aztec treasure. Photo made during OPSAIL 2012
