Kayaking with Solomon

Kayaking with Solomon

Solomon was found unconscious on the side of the road by a friend of mine, who promptly gave him to me! He has a very siamese shape and voice. He enjoys walking on his leash every day and kayaking with me when he is in the mood.

Kayaking with Solomon belongs to the following groups:

You (and he) are so lucky. I can’t even persuade my lab that canoeing is a great thing so for Solomon to enjoy kayaking…. You lucky pair.

  • LifeInMaine replied

Labs are wonderful dogs, but have you considered getting a cat??? Apart from a litter of 3 totally wild and hysterical kittens, all my cats have been willing to go kayaking, especially if started as a kitten.

  • Ranald

    Ranald

We have one. I hand reared her from about 2 weeks old but she is still very wild at 7 years old. No chance of getting her anywhere near the boat, we had to get the poor wee soul sedated to get a collar on. It lasted 2 weeks and that was that. Decided against another collar.

  • LifeInMaine replied

That is a pity. Solomon had never seen a harness or a kayak until I took him in at 9 months old. My 3 wild ones were born in my house!

brilliant shot and love the colour coordination going with her lead and your lovely kayak against the oh so blue river water! gorgeous capture ;))

  • LifeInMaine replied

Thank you, it just worked out and he was cooperating for a change. usually when I point the camera towards him he walks towards me! Maine does gorgeous colors.

Beautiful cat, beautiful shot! My Noodle looks just like Solomon, same profile, same shiny coat, similar personality. Noodle is a rescue, too. I wonder what breed these cats are,...Oriental shorthair?? The seem to be very vocal, people-oriented, loving and funny cats. I found another one in a shelter, I am not sure though if I could handle two such active cats, though…

  • LifeInMaine replied

He is precious, but he does drive me rather crazy!!!! yes, I think Oriental Shorthair is the closest, but he loves the word siamese.

this is an amazing shot …cats generally dont like water first of all and then to go in a boat lol too cool !

  • LifeInMaine replied

The funny thing is, he hates water! He will not walk down a road with puddles of water, but he loves kayaking.

  • Diane Schuster

This cat is really a person, very opinionated and definitely found the one that he should be with, there are no accidents! Great shot!

  • LifeInMaine replied

Oh yes, he is VERY opinionated!

  • flamingalfa

A wonderful picture – so unique. It is very hard to do justice to a black cat, but I love how you have caught his expression here.

  • LifeInMaine replied

Thank you, he is not an easy subject. He poses beautifully until he hears me turn the camera on and he comes and rubs his face on it! Yesterday he went kayaking and accidentally jumped in twice. Poor judgment was involved.

  • flamingalfa

    flamingalfa

Oh dear – I hope he accidentally jumped in after some fish??? Have you seen a breed called Bombay? Very sleek fur, asian body type and golden eyes – your Solomon may be similar…

  • LifeInMaine replied

He misjudged his distance from land the second time. The first time he mistook some reeds for dry land….. :) We just came back from a paddle this morning and he was much more sensible and we had a lovely paddle together. And yes, I have heard of the Bombay breed. He is a gorgeous cat.

  • LifeInMaine replied

Thank you Angela. Actually he hates water and regards a kayak as a good place to keep his paws dry. He loves to be doing something outdoors with me.

  • LifeInMaine replied

Thank you, and is getting very conceited with all the attention. Now a cat magazine in England wants to do a story on him!

  • jegustavsen

    jegustavsen

He reminds me of my gray kitty, who was found by our trash can. I am not sure what kind of cat he is, but he is the most affectionate cat we have ever had and social. Talks to us, and loves to be held. I can walk around holding him, and he will clean himself. I kayak, but have never thought of bringing him a long. I guess I would be afraid he would run off.

  • LifeInMaine replied

If your cat love to be with you that much, then he will probably go kayaking with you. All 10 of my cats are indoor cats and go out on a leash. The leash is very important when the cat falls in so you can haul it back into the kayak. I have never taken a cat kayaking that did not fall in!

  • jegustavsen

    jegustavsen

:). I was thinking of a small (some kind of life vest) with a leash. My gray kitty loves to sit on the edge of the tub and has fallen in a couple times.

  • LifeInMaine replied

Most cats are excellent swimmers. The harness and leash ensures their safety. I am not sure how they would take to the life jacket.

  • jegustavsen

    jegustavsen

Thank you so much Shelagh for the information. I am excited about trying this next Spring. I am not a Winter Kayaker, you can see some photos in my collection of us kayaking. We have the ones with the peddles (I have joint/arthritis) in my hands), and this works out great b/c I am use to being active.

  • LifeInMaine replied

Gray Kitty is so beautiful. I look forward to seeing a photo of him kayaking. Just keep a hold of his leash. And give him his first lesson when the water is warm. There is nothing quite as unpleasant as a wet cat on your lap on a cold evening!

  • jegustavsen

    jegustavsen

I’m glad your friend gave him to you & that he’s okay. My Tigger goes for walks with me but without a leash. He sits on command & comes when I call him too. I think he thinks he’s a dog! =) I love that yours goes kayaking with you! Too cool!

  • LifeInMaine replied

Tigger sounds like another remarkable cat. I had a cat who pooped and peed on command (very useful on long road trips). She would also hike for miles with me. Solomon so enjoys his outings. He always comes when called inside the house as he is hoping for an outing!

  • satsumagirl

    satsumagirl

Wow what a neat cat! Does he ever try to swim?

May I ask why this cat was unconscious when he was found? Do you know?

  • LifeInMaine replied

Yes, he really is great! In answer to your first question, not willingly, but he frequently falls in. Not good as he hates wet paws. It was not clear when he was found if he had been hit by a car or thrown out of one, or just collapsed with heat and starvation as it was a very warm day. He did not appear to have any injuries and revived with food and water in a cool house.

  • satsumagirl

    satsumagirl

    Hi Shelagh

Thanks for the info on Solomon! I am glad to hear that it was easy enough to revive him.

He is truely a unique cat. My cats wouldn’t be able to go on a boat.

What a great photograph. I love this. My luck with Kaaking was not so good and I am just thankful that I did not have my camera with me when I was out on the water. A boat roared by and flipped me before I even had a change to get turned around. This looks like too much fun, though and is a great capture. He looks alot like my Smokey who also has an Oriental type of body shape.

  • LifeInMaine replied

Thank you Marjorie! I am always terrified of going in with my camera. The great shots are too good to miss though.
