The manatee’s closest living relative is an elephant! I was surprised to learn this but after noting the body bristles, little nails on their flippers and little round whisker areas where a tusk would be I can see the resemblance. This manatee is in an refuge centre in Chetumal Mexico. They told us he is free to go but kept returning… so now he eats 22 kg of lettuce a day and does circles in a pen.

There is something really cute about them, I have just read you are in Comox, we know the island very well, we love it there, have several good friends on the Island, from Victoria to Campbell River, we haven’t been over for a couple of years due to health issues of mine and we do miss it dreadfully,
    take care hugs Ann

  • Sorry to hear about the health issues Ann. It’s forums like this that keep us connected in a visual way; you can be here in mind and spirit if not body ;)
ps – manatees are loosely related to elephants, if you look closely do you see it?

Lovely shot. He does indeed appear to be smiling. I appreciate the informative write-up too.

Delightful shot ! My kids had the opportunity to swim with these lovely creatures in Florida when they were in grade school !

  • What a special experience for your kids! I would have LOVED to swim with him but was not allowed… he was entertaining to watch though.
