The Bay of Islands in the Northland Region of North Island, New Zealand is 60 km north-west of Whangarei, the only city in the North Island. The Bay is an irregular inlet, 16 km wide, and is a natural harbour. There are around 144 islands in the Bay. The difference between a rock and an island is, according to those who live there: if it has anything growing on it, it is an island. If it is barren it is a rock.
